Doughty Street on the Irish Election…

If you missed it, that 18 Doughty Street TV discussion, which includes surprise guest Trimble (as much a surprise to him as to the rest of us) on the Republic’s Election is now available in archive. Why did Bertiegate not stick? Is the economy stupid? How STV in slows the long term progress of any rising political project, and pitting party colleague against party colleague. Ireland: a pioneer of post ideological politics? The third division parliament, and the political primacy …

Bring back Lordi!

It might seem like only yesterday.. but it’s now time to bid farewell to our Eurovision OverLordies and choose a new regime for the year ahead. The Guardian’s former CultureVulture, Anna Pickard may, or may not, be live-blogging the event.. but someone else definitely is.. According to the BBC report, “Ukrainian drag queen Verka Serdyuchka is the bookies’ favourite”.. although their reporter likens the act to “Les Dawson trying to sing Gina G.” ANYhoo.. let’s just say I’ll not be …

“Just a normal day on top of a crane..”

The Belfast Telegraph report at the time had a somewhat misleading headline, although the quoted eyewitness does say “knocked over”. The Newsletter report from the same date, 5th April, detailed the incident more accurately. And now the BBC has some, heavily edited, footage. A spokesman for Harland & Wolff confirmed that they believed the film was genuine. “It relates to an incident which occurred at the shipyard on Wednesday 4 April,” he said. “But we can make no further comment …

A vote for McCartney is a vote for Butler…

There’s several segments to this DUP video blog… But note the middle section, where Jeffrey Donaldson has a very local message aimed at Bob McCartney’s challenge in the constituency (about half way through)… interesting how the complexity of PR election processes can give rise to such straightforward messaging… Butler’s success hinges on a number of factors, and few (one would guess) to do with the face off between the provisionally pro agreement DUP and anti agreement McCartney… but the key …

YouTubing on the fly…

Ciaran Mussen is a serious folk musician as well as a Green councillor on Newry and Mourne Council and their candidate for South Down. The sound is not great, and it could do with more work on the messaging side, but in what is rapidly becoming a crowded market, it is at least an attempt to use something more creative than the talk to camera format. Mussen has a popular base in the south of the constituency, and some of …

Or maybe not.. The public has, however, spoken. And Ireland’s entry for the 52nd Eurovision Song Contest is.. “They Can’t Stop the Spring” as performed by Dervish. Music of the troubles…

Thanks to Blogorrah for pointing us in the direction of Ryan Foley’s top ten songs on the Troubles. But I’m inclined to agree that the Cranberries’ Zombie is a glaring omission from the list… Not least for the line, “And the violence caused such silence…”Ryan’s: 1 – Streets of Sorrow – The Pogues 2 – Cypress Avenue – Van Morrison (bit of a cheat , but there is footage of 1979 Belfast in the video) 3 – Sunday Bloody Sunday …
