The BBC’s Mark Devenport points to the “layers of irony” in the “thinly veiled threats” from the NI Executive’s Finance Minister, DUP’s Peter Robinson’s statement in the Assembly last night. The Guardian’s film critic Peter Bradshaw got this from the Observer’s Philip French. A 9mins 28 secs long “parody of all the “100” list specials that the American Film Institute keeps putting out” – “100 Movies, 100 Quotes, 100 Numbers”. “Enjoy” might not be the appropriate directive, but Peter Bradshaw’s right in describing it as “an inspired collage”. The determinedly iconoclastic Anthony Wilson 1950-2007, founder of both Factory Records and the Hacienda Club – the former being home to Joy Division – and someone who will always be, for a certain generation, Mr Madchester, has died of a heart attack whilst battling cancer. Cinematographer Lazlo Kovac died this week – the American Society of Cinematographers has an account of his early life – from escaping Hungary in 1956, “carrying some 30,000 ft of film in sacks”, through early biker movies, to classics such as Easy Rider, Five Easy Pieces, and on to Ghostbusters and more recent, if less acclaimed, films.
