Photograph of the day – Ribbon

I’m assuming that these yellow ribbons, which appeared last weekend around Templemore Ave, have something to do with the recent deployment of the RIR to Afghanistan. Unfortunately due to excessive exposure as a youngster i’m always reminded of this Moochin PhotomanPhotographer and visual artist based in Belfast. I have facilitated community based workshops with groups as diverse as visually impaired individuals in Dungannn, Travellers across Northern Ireland, Young Offenders and many community groups across Belfast. Hacks and Hackers Hack Day Belfast (and Dublin)

logo from scraperwiki.com

Just noticed an event on Saturday 13 November that is likely to be of interest to some Slugger readers and contributors. (I’ve no connection with Scraperwiki or 4iP!) Free ticket booking – for hacks and hackers – over at Eventbrite. To quote from their blurb … What? Scraperwiki, the award-winning new screen scraper and data mining tool, funded by 4iP, is putting on a one day practical hack day* in Belfast at which web developers and designers will pair up …

Photograph of the day Berry Street protest

Being busy myself on Friday nights culture night i didn’t get to see too much. However i did catch the protest from Flaxart and the forum for an Alternative Belfast which is actively lobbying for Berry Street to be reopened. Formerly known as Factory Row, now Berry Street, it runs from Royal Ave to Smithfield Market, or it did until a rubbish yard was built when Castlecourt was developed, effectively closing the street. Bank Square is a much under utilised …

Titanic sinking sensation – the real story at last?

After so much myth and legend, the Titanic story can still rock us with surprise. Only now have we got the hidden story of how Titanic really sank. A left turn order ( “hard a -starboard)” meant turn right on steamships, contrary to helmsmanship on sailing ships. But the helmsman got it wrong. Naturally, this is disputed… (see Channel 4 News story). You push the tiller right, the rudder swings left, and if the boat were in a pond it …

Belfast’s ‘Magic Jug’ dropped

BBC NI Radio Ulster’s Evening Extra has reported that the Northern Ireland Department for Social Development have confirmed that the ‘Magic Jug’ public art sculpture, destined for Fountain Street, Belfast, has been cancelled. [added link to BBC report] Nothing to do with the campaign, apparently.  The £100,000 cost has been cited as the main factor in the decision.  They have, reportedly, already spent £20,000 on the commissioning process. Adds  In the comments zone Moochin points to this 27 Aug letter from the …

Photograph of the Day – Talking of FoIs

There’s an ongoing (but faltering) discussion as to the cost of Freedom of Information requests, so when i saw this disguarded bottle on Sunday morning i was reminded of this article. I did see an article recently (which i can’t seem to find to link to) that said there were around 100 or so Bucky related incidents here. I’ve never been a fan of the stuff myself, the last time i had any (bout 4 months ago)  i mixed it with …

Well done lads. You deserve a medal.

Former TUV* candidate for Iris Robinson’s (hastily vacated) Castlereagh Borough Council seat, Ann Cooper, yesterday posted on her Twitter account her support for the sacked HM Customs and Revenue workers who used their position to ensure that ethnic minorities claiming benefits were underpaid. I was reluctant to give this ignorant bigotry and racism any sort of publicity but i think considering that the sacked workers were based in Dorchester house here in Belfast it only seems fair to do so. …

Photograph of the Day – Play me I’m Yours

The 10 pianos have been painted/pimped/decorated by local artists. This lovely(whimsical)  project is part of Craft NI craft month. In the last 2 days i have rounded corners to hear unexpected music including a group of around 10 or so singing along to contemporary songs as one of their friends played the tunes (very very well it has to be said). Pianos are located at City Hall, Commercial Court (Duke of York), Cotton Court, Cornmarket sculpture (monstrosity), Rosemary St (First …
