A farce within a force

With today’s protest against DUP/SF proposed legislation to restrict the right to public assembly the PSNI earlier demonstrated how they will try and curb the current right to legal Public Assembly anyhow. Last year the PSNI successfully prevented éirígí’s protest against Armed Forces Day in Belfast by blocking protestors as they made their way to the assembly point. This year éirígí got around that by assembling directly at City Hall and not travelling there as a group. This meant their …

Photograph of the day – ongoing conversations

A couple of weeks ago i attended a meeting at the Mount conference centre to discuss the ongoing issue of interface trouble around the Albertbridge Road /Woodstock link/Mount Pottinger Road. Organised by the Belfast Conflict Resolution Consortium (BCRC) all the statutory bodies were represented as you’d expect, though quite why the PSNI felt it necessary to have 6 officers sitting in on the 2 hour meeting, with another two in a Landrover in the carpark,  i’m a little uncertain. Provision …

St George’s Market set to open for business on a Sunday

Belfast City Council has just voted by 28 votes to 13 to allow St George’s market to open on a Sunday. The Council’s Development Committee, now headed by Conor Maskey, voted against an amendment tabled by the DUP, which asked for the proposal in the minutes to be put back until a strategic plan could be put in place. It was effectively another delaying tactic by the DUP who have dragged their heels at every turn over the past few …

Photograph of the Day – Aeroplanes at the Waterworks(amongst other things)

The Waterworks Park in North Belfast (off the Antrim Rd) was taken over by Belfast Children's Festival. Community groups, Youth clubs and Volunteers were there from 6am to help decorate the park with all manner of streamers and created 'mobiles'. Activities ranged from the usual face painting and craft activities to roaming performers, stilt walkers, jugglers and the like. Not forgetting the 30 second movie theatre (only 2 people at a time), a BMX/Skateboard demonstration ramp. The was also a live music stage where the best of up and coming musicians showcased their music. I heard one child ask her Mum if the park was going to be like this every weekend over the summer. A great event and one that'd i'd heartily recommend for next year.
