Magners League Third Weekend

Scarlets 20 – 22 Munster Connacht 18 – 16 Cardiff Blues Newport-Gwent D’gons 30 – 19 Glasgow Ospreys 11 – 18 Leinster Ulster 13 – 16 Edinburgh Watched Ospreys Leinster and Scarlets Munster myself. Both truly magnificent examples of the generous philanthropy of the Welsh. Ospreys pathetic (and in real crisis) and Scarlets just like decided to let Munster win – very strange game. Here’s the table – Scotland doing well. 1 Edinburgh 3 @ 13 2 Newport-Gwent D’gons 3 …

Adam Price to leave Westminster

The political star of his generation, Adam Price MP, has announced that he will be leaving Westminster at the next election. The Western Mail reports that he’s been awarded a $40,000 Fullbright scholarship to study for a year in the US. He then intends to become an Assembly member at the 2011 elections. Betsan speculates on potential successors in what is that unusual beast, a relatively safe Plaid Cymru seat. I’m more interested in how Adam can get into the …

The enduring scar of sectarianism

David McKittrick, in yesterday’s Indie, writes: “There have been 65 emergency re-housing cases in the five months since April; the total for the whole of last year was 100……………………A total of 1,500 sectarian attacks – an average of four a day – were recorded in the past year, almost exactly the same as in the previous 12 months………Last year, north Belfast, a traditionally deeply divided area, notched up 560 sectarian incidents, more than a third of those recorded in the …

Magners League Second Weekend

Glasgow 19 – 11 Scarlets Leinster 23 – 14 Newport-Gwent D’gons Ospreys 16 – 20 Ulster Edinburgh 62 – 13 Connacht Munster 24 – 13 Cardiff Blues Hmmm there’s a wonderful onomatopoeia in Welsh – Trychineb Ulster did well I must say but Ospreys are in real trouble – it’s like Real Madrid losing to Newport County…. Paramilitary Funeral – Machynlleth style

Glyn Rowlands of Corris, Machynlleth was buried last week. An ex member of the Free Wales Army, Mr Rowlands was one of the few FWA men to be prosecuted back in the day. Here’s Glyn ap Gruffudd’s tribute. Photos of the funeral parade by Sian Ifan (c) here and here. Thanks to Daithi DewiWelsh Nationalist. Rugby Fan. Know a bit about History and Railways…

Plaid gather at Llandudno

Plaid’s conference this year is in the Conwy resort of Llandudno. Ron Davies thinks that the 21st century could be Plaid’s time – a potential recruit according to Simon. I wasn’t a great Ieuan Wyn fan when he replaced Dafydd Wigley as party leader – I didn’t think he listened well. However since becoming Deputy First Minister he’s grown immensely in my eyes. Here’s his theory and here’s the practice – Think Different. Think Plaid. What do you think of …

Cornwall wakes up

The recent European elections were one of the strangest elections in UK psephological history…… The Tories won the popular vote in Wales. That’s the first time since 1918 that Labour have failed to win the popular vote in a Welsh election. Sinn Fein topped the poll with you – first time ever. Here’s the result. The most interesting result, however, was in the Cornish part of South West England, where Mebyon Kernow managed, astonishingly, to beat Labour and come in …

Magners League First weekend

Results: Scarlets 18 – 16 Leinester Cardiff Blues 21 – 22 Edinburgh Connacht 12 – 19 Ospreys Glasgow 22 – 9 Munster Dragons 23 – 6 Ulster Managed to watch the Scarlets and Dragons games. Both determined efforts by the Welsh teams with deserved wins. Ulster seemed a bit listless I have to say – although that Danielli will prove a good signing IMHO……Not the greatest of starts for the Irish teams…Did anyone see Munster? What on earth happened there …

Welsh Blog round up

Now getting spoilt. The excellent Waleshome.org has a good essay on the future of Welsh Labour. Syniadau has been doing the detail on Welsh Medium Education. Three consecutive posts, Trimsaran, Caerffili and Risca. Adam on American urban decline. Tory economist Dylan discusses entrepreneurship in Wales – No Good Boyo – wonderfully – on Polish-Lithuanian relationships. The continual riduculous saga on the translation of the record of Assembly proceedings continues to rumble. Note the strength of the Tory observations on Betsan’s …

Stalag IV

I hesitated a little before posting this as there is very little Irish connection – but it’s really fascinating so I will anyway. The BBC report on a fantastic addition to the National Library’s on-line collection. Cymro – 7 issues of the magazine ‘Cymro’, created by Welsh prisoners of war during the Second World War. These prisoners were members of the ‘Cymric Club’ in the Stalag IVB camp near Mühlberg, Germany. The magazines were produced between July 1943 and December …

A new demographic across the UK (and south Belfast)…

Horseman is back blogging after a summer break. He refers to a NISRA report on the Long- term International Migration Estimates for Northern Ireland (2007-8) “…..birth registration data show that the proportion of children born in Northern Ireland whose mother was born outside the United Kingdom and Ireland has risen three fold over the last eight years. In 2001, 3% of babies had foreign born mothers (700 babies out of 22,000) while in the first six months of 2009 this …

The Technology of Language Learning

Yesterday’s Western Mail describes the fairly astonishing progress of this new Web site for Welsh learners. 3,800 registered users so far. Some of the tributes from all over the world: “Since I’m from Germany, I did not have a very good access to courses etc – up until now! Yesterday, I tried the first lesson of the course and I can only say: WOW. This is MUCH more fun and effective than any textual explanations. Now I always listen to …

Magners League

The Magners League – playground of the stars –is upon us once again. Compared to the competition – Blood and Drugs Magners seems to be in rude health. This year, for the first time, there are play-offs, the top four compete for the title at seasom end. The Scotsman thinks it’s a good idea. Not quite as sure about the introduction of Italian teams next season: “With so much going for the league the case for introducing two Italian teams …

Nest Ferch Rhys (3) – Gwenllian, Lord Rhys and Owen Tudor

We’ve mentioned Nest’s brother Gruffudd ap Rhys briefly before. As son and heir to Rhys ap Tewdwr he had a bad start when Rhys got killed in 1093 and his lands passed to the Normans. As was the style amongst penniless Welsh heroes of the day, Gruffudd spent the years following his Dad’s death in exile in Ireland. After one unsuccessful truce with Henry 1 and another Irish interlude Gruffudd joined Owain Gwynedd’s superb 1137 campaign which liberated Deheubarth. Smashed …

Cwsg Osian

Daithi links to this article in the Western Mail. It’s a review of a new book on Michael D Jones, who established “Y Wladfa”, the Welsh colony in Patagonia in 1865. The National Library has a nice site on the trials and tribulations of the project. And finally the Irish connection – Eisteddfod Chubut – the winning ladies party in last year’s Chubut Eisteddfod in Patagonia. It’s an excellent version of “Cwsg Osian” – Osian is your Oisín of Tir …
