What, exactly, is brilliant about it?

  • Pete Baker

    “funny ?”

    Sheesh..

  • Dewi

I reckon the ironic contrast with the Cadburys advert is funny myself. But there you go..

  • DC

C’mon Pete lighten up, you’d almost think someone in the BBC had threatened to close down your YouTube account.

  • Pete Baker

“I reckon the ironic contrast with the Cadburys advert is funny myself.”

You have a very low threshold in regard to “funny”.

  • Dewi

Maybe Pete – but I did laugh – sorry.

Yeah, ‘cos devoting an entire piece to what you consider to be a grammatical error within a press release issued by Gerry Adams is what blogging is all about.

Keep up the good work you lonely little man.

    Dewi,

In Norn Iron there must always be balance-thing only Prod monkeys if there are Fenian Monkeys – luckily fair_deal has restored community-relations-equilibrium with his offering (do you know the armalite is on my foot)

No monkeys in the next one but it is very funny, there is music and there is an Irish connection.

  • smcgiff

I thought it was funny – rather inevitable skit really.

  • smcgiff

    Very funny Gonzo.

Reminds me of Robbie Keane’s Liverpool career ending goal attempt in the Champions League, Sammy McN. Poor bugger!

    Also very good, Sammy M!

I roared at it!!! Funny I nearly bloody choked on me kit kat.

What is wrong with Pete Baker? Doesn’t he have a sense of humour?

Maybe the gorilla could give him a back rub.

Perhaps if the video contained a link which linked to an article about videos which, in turn, was cluttered with links, all of which linked to a giant picture of a man clicking a link with 2 bandaged hands, Pete Baker would not be so annoyed.

It certainly would explain a lot.

  • Just another f**king monkey

    This chick is stoooooopid.

Yes my love, the funny man has put on a big monkey suit and adopted props which reference particular cultural and ethnic origins – so the joke is that this ethnic cultural group are monkeys !

    Oh, now that’s droll.

So, that’s keen little posts about how the welsh boys can have exciting paramilitary events too, (just like the cool bigger Irish boys), and jokes comparing portions of humanity to monkeys. Someone contact a paranormal investigator, Phil Silvers has returned in female form here.

Protestant people and anti-racists generally should really think about whether it is right to contribute to a site that actually publishes this sort of vile abuse. We should ask ourselves also why a site at such pains to limited personal abuse should allow itself to be a platform for the ridiculing of an entire (particular) ethnic cultural group. The type of mentality we get here is going to see this site attracting the sort of low lives that call for the sterilisation of women from the particular ethnic group they dislike. Oh wait……..didn’t that comment already get made about women from the Shankill ? Ah yes, it did.

No doubt Phillipa Silvers here will reject being called racist, reminding us that she is only a joker; but that sort said the same thing about black and white minstrels – it did not alter the fact that they were in reality a cruel, effete and obscene form of ridicule, that only hardened the already copiously justified total distaste and ill will that was felt towards those who found the performance ‘brilliant’, and took satisfaction and reassurance from it. It is a poor sort of non-racist who discriminates upon their application of this ethic when they come to a particular group they happen to personally not like. I wonder what other ethnic groups dewi finds it funny to see portrayed as monkeys ?

“I wonder what other ethnic groups dewi finds it funny to see portrayed as monkeys”

I didn’t portray any ethnic groups as monkeys – it was the drumming that was the parody – if I offended I do apologise but it was a parody of an advert and absolutely no offense meant. I just laughed out loud when I watched it.

dont let this censor you. it was harmless.

The appropriate response is to repeatedly challenge posters to prove how you are wrong ad nauseam.

  • Prionsa Eoghann

    This sketch is from a Scottish TV show where the main man who does all the impersonations is a big Rangers fan. They always make fun of things around sectarianism, with Larkhall(the name on the drum) percieved to be one of the remaining backwaters of orangeholeism. There was a story recently about some shop or other having to change it’s livery away from green. Unconfirmed reports are that there are groups howling at the green lights on traffic lights. After checking if my memory was correct about the traffic lights, it is actually worse than i joked about;

    Here is the story backing up the first part;

    http://tinyurl.com/69eh8t

    Sad!

  • Itwas SammyMcNally whatdoneit

    PE,

That is some incedible story. I wonder if Subway issued a statement?

As an occasional visitor to Scotland I am always struck by how strange it seems that all the people are crammed into such small geographical areas leaving most of the country ‘unspoilt’ and how serious trouble has sucessfully been avoided given the obvious continuing sectarianism.

  • Prionsa Eoghann

    Sammy

There are big similarities with all of us regarding acknowledging the depth of sectarianism, how much still exists and how it manifests itself etc. On the plus side for Scotland and Scots is that the majority non-Catholic mainly non-religious community have firmly come down on the side of eradicating sectarianism. Sadly not so with you guys.

We used to get periodic visitors from all over the north years ago and those new to Glasgow never ceased to be intruiged that our tenement, and those all around were hopelessly mixed with Catholic and Prod families just living their lives as normal. I get the feeling that people are finally fed up with all the Orange/Loyalist marches we get. The old attitudes of ‘just ignore them’ or ‘keep the heid doon’ are not as acceptable now.

We too are bewildered that in Donegal all kinds of expensive houses dot what would be a beautiful countryside. i take it the planning laws are tighter in the north than the republic?

Not got a clue how subway dealt with it, turned a colour blind eye maybe?

  • Monkey

“Are lambeg drum beaters representative of a entire ethnic group”

in the sense that tin whistle blowers would generally indicate something irish themed, yes. When you have the name of a Scots Protestant band up the side of the instrument it can only add to the impression……

It is equally offensive to single out particular parts of communities, and phraes like ‘orange hole ism’ would denote the general nature of the prejudiced antagonism.

Trying to infer the high jinks of young lads are illustrative of the entire towns disposition, or that such a disposition should be seen then as “Orange” is a commentary on prejudice in itself. it does remind me of a recent incident regarding a Boots store in Belfast, of course that involved adult members of the leading political party / private criminal militia in that area amongst others.

The parallel between this bigoted selectivity with standards of behaviour and Turgons highlighting of how pathetic and cowardly Nationalist attempts at this are, above, is striking.

No one claims Ulster Loyalism is an ethnicity, it is however the typical political expression of the ambitions of a particular ethnic group. The funny funny joke did not ridicule political opinion, it characterised a member of a traditional band particular to that ethnic cultural group as a monkey. If you feel bands in Ulster to be nothing other than political movements, and, apparently that if this were so it would justify ridicule on these dehumanising terms, you can at least excuse your hostile disposition with a display of your ignorance, although it would hardly compensate for the grossly objectionable character of your ideas of acceptable ridicule. And isn’t it funny guys, that sometimes we are one people and at others we are planter and Gael ? It seems the criteria for which designation our neighbours adopt will be whichever is most suited to denigrating our rights at the time.

As for my, or Protestants (how did he know ?) generally (cough cough), lack of a sense of humour, or whatever artificial and hostile stereotypes you would wish to apply to Protestants besides, sorry, “some Protestants”, it really depends for them as for everyone whether something is a joke or an insult – or indeed whether that joke (or insult) is actually funny or pertinent. I’m sorry but a ‘you lot are monkeys’ jibe themed with a popular confectionary advert isn’t funny, it’s just insulting and has worrying implications. Reducing a people to the level of animals, on the part of a society, its media or its various other establishments or indeed its Diaspora – characterising another society as somehow less than human is a key component in some of the worst tragedies in history. Perhaps if Irish people could be brought to understand that their Scots neighbours are not big animals, rather than have the position gratified and assured that its expression is socially acceptable, perhaps then a distressingly high number of them would not have found it quite so easy on their conscience to commit or condone atrocities. Then again perhaps I’ve spent too much time relaxing in the garden centre reading my beltel after a fine day dispossessing culturally attractive proud Gaelic agrarian misty eyed poetic young widows for the benefit of obese and sadistic English capitalists to appreciate the edgy humour of the Nationalist working poor.

  • Monkey

Dewi my dear, you are free to prevaricate about what you intended as much as you wish. It should be considered, however, that this ‘Slugger O’Toole’ is not a blog for irrelevant things people find funny, that you yourself are not in the habit of posting irrelevant things you happen to simply find funny, preferring instead musings on topical affairs from a republican policy perspective and information for the Irish about the cultural out workings of Welsh militant nationalist extremism and its comparable nature, and that it is in this context you posted something relevant to Northern Ireland that you found funny, and that the item in question featured regalia and paraphernalia recognisable as that of the cultural ethnic group in Ulster that stand, in their politics, in opposition to your own; and that the creature portrayed was a monkey caricature representing a member of that cultural ethnic group.
And whilst you may indeed claim that it was simply the references to a confectionary advert that amused you, why would this be funny to anyone? What would be the point of the video without the recognisable cultural paraphernalia? The big joke is the portrayal of Ulster traditional music enthusiasts as monkeys, not that there was an advert featuring a monkey once and that by revisiting this we somehow derive humour, and wherein therefore the deliberately selected props have no pertinent significance to the message. I would (kindly) suggest that your curt attempts at demurity would be better footed if they stood up to even basic logical inspection. You should just try to be more generous in your attitude, I’m offended by this for the same reason I’m offended on other’s behalf by the ‘simian’ caricatures regarding the Catholic Irish popular in the 18th and 19th centuries. Of course by your reasoning these would just have been exploring the theme of Neanderthal in typical Homo Saipan context for the purpose of humour. But I would say that would be as ridiculous a suggestion as your own. Open up your heart Dewi, show some love and some respect to your Loyalist neighbours, let us see you have something more than drivelled bile to add to the debate in this heady age of reconciliation – perhaps get yourself a fine strapping young Ulster lad to take you out on a date or two, (you know what they say about ‘going black’, don’t you?). Get it into your head that these are your fellow human beings, not monkeys, and show us all that you have better things to have a personality about than the embittering and degrading obsessions of nationalism and the freaky funerals of evil stinking old codgers.

  • Dewi

“The funny funny joke did not ridicule political opinion, it characterised a member of a traditional band particular to that ethnic cultural group as a monkey”

No it didn’t – it parodied a Cadbury’s chocolate bar advert where a Gorilla (a noble animal) drummed along to Phil Collins. Using your logic then the advert characterised An English Rock drummer as a Gorilla. It didn’t – the joke was parodying the drumming and advert rather than any racist / ethnic slur.
There are plenty of examples of such slurs around – but this isn’t one of them.

  • Itwas SammyMcNally whatdoneit

    Monkey,

are you suggesting that those who march up and down in very funny costumes and celebrate an anti-French-pro-papal-battle-from-the-17thCentury which they alone think is relevant to today should not be gently teased to help ease them
    into 21st century thinking?

  • Dewi

“What would be the point of the video without the recognisable cultural paraphernalia?”

I missed your second post before I replied.

That statement is true, that’s where the amusement came – translating an award winning drumming based advert into a Lambeg drumming context was the funny bit. But I honestly can’t see how it offended – the Gorilla bit was the parody of the advert not an offensive slur.
I do recognise that you and others disagree however.

    Lol! Brilliant keep it up.

ps. You managed to retread some of my thoughts, did you not notice the bit where I stated that the guy who’s show the gorrilla sketch was on is in fact a massive Rangers fan. It was him rippin the piss out of the shite that you are so intent on defending. The wee Welsh guy is just the messenger. Here is Jonathon Watson rippin the piss out of the public/media obsession with Henrick Larsson(the king of kings) note the Rangers fan is wearing an Engurland top.

I guess the fact that Watson is a Rangers fan would have precluded the rest of the nonsensical rant you embarked on. Still it gave me a right chuckle, thanks.

Dewi: translating an award winning drumming based advert into a Lambeg drumming context…
And it wasn’t a Lambeg drum.

  • Prionsa Eoghann

I showed the gorrilla video to my wee fella and his pals and got a mild laugh as it was auld news to them. Turns out the rangers fan amongst them has it on his phone, he got it at the loyalist band practice he goes to. Seems that they have a sense of humour and don’t see it as an attack on their ‘culture’ or etnicity!?!? They could be wrong I suppose, knowing some of them(as I do) ignorance not intelligence is their forte.
