Magners League First weekend

Results:
Scarlets 18 – 16 Leinester
Cardiff Blues 21 – 22 Edinburgh
Connacht 12 – 19 Ospreys
Glasgow 22 – 9 Munster
Dragons 23 – 6 Ulster

Managed to watch the Scarlets and Dragons games. Both determined efforts by the Welsh teams with deserved wins. Ulster seemed a bit listless I have to say – although that Danielli will prove a good signing IMHO……Not the greatest of starts for the Irish teams…Did anyone see Munster? What on earth happened there (mind you looking at the Blues result are Scottish regions the new Magners force?)

A wee note to all our rugby loving viewers maybe even David McNarry. If you have an Astra dish of any sort you can watch BBC2 Wales for the games. Sadly although Virgin offers the BBC1 national variations it doesn’t offer BBC2 Wales.

It is a universal truth. If you want sport get a dish.

    Was it available online?

I watched in online on BBC.

Any in God’s own country who did the same?

    That was irony BTW.

    Dewi,

re. Munster game – didnt see it but according to Munsterfans website( which is excellent) prop Buckley had a nightmare.

What was not excellent was Scrum 5 not even making reference to Munster’s game on Friday night – they still dont realise that they must treat Magner’s as a proper league.

re. Irish results – worrying, but I must try and see the bigger picture and sooner or later (hopefully) things have to start going right for Scottish teams and maybe this might be the start of a stirring in the glens.

p.s. Have you seen Ian Humphreys sporting his beard and with the gum shield in – he looks the dead spit of Grizzly – if you knock off a few years. I am a big fan of Ian’s and he might just get a good run in the team now that his older brother is picking it.

wouldn;t read too much into the munster and leinster results – I assume both sides were mssing most of their regulars? Both sides have recruited well and should build on their performances last season.

As for Ulster, it’s back to square one. New coach, no chief exec and a lot of young players coming through the ranks. That said, the performance today was really really poor and doesn’t bode well for the rest of the season. As for Danielli, he’s been with us a while and has been one of the better signings of late :). Things don’t get any easier with an away trip to the ospreys next week but hopefully we’ll get back to winning ways at the renovated ravenhill towards the end of sept. You should make it down some time Dewi 🙂

“You should make it down some time Dewi :)”

    Up – surely?

As an aside Dragons coach Paul Turner is from my village.
He came to my Dad’s funeral:

    Newbridge mourns Rugby great

His observation: “Dew, best thing about about the funeral was no blasted religion” – cool.

    Dewi,

very sorry to hear about that – excellent tribute.

Big fan of Turner’s – he never does the rant about the lack of finance for the region which he must be itching to do. Why does Celtic-Manor-man not supply the necessaries – a few million and the HC success might become a possibility?

Talking of Welsh rugby funerals – as you undoubtedly know, Bleddyn Williams was recently buried (July)- his life in rugby and the RAF reads like real comic book stuff – Wiki has been updated. (Jack Matthews is still alive but now in poor health.)

    Orangey-type,

have you paid your debt to Slugger for your lost bet?

  • borderline

very interesting dewi, sorry for your loss.

  • Mike

Hmm. One would have thought the FIFA World Cup qualifiers might have warranted a mention on Slugger.

Hint: Northern Ireland, and indeed the Republic of Ireland, are doing rather well…
