Sinn Fein to take last seat through multiple transfers?

In Dublin South-Central Aengus O Snodaigh is currently 769 ahead of Eric Byrne of Labour who is fighting for a second seat for Labour… Brid Smyth, of People before Profit vote transfers should break towards SF’s sitting TD… but there are still some counts to go before we’ll have a clear result… some nails to be bitten down to the quick? McDaid and Blaney home…

Right, I am going to bed now… The FF vote has 50% decreased from 68% (if you add Blaney’s IFF vote from 2002)… But on the last count, Jim McDaid noses in front of MacLochlainn, and then Blaney comes over the line… Good day for Milford… Bad news for Inishowen… Keavney seems to have been crunched by the good Doctor’s Letterkenny defence stratagem… McLochlainn must be gutted… Mick FealtyMick is founding editor of Slugger. Mary O’Rourke comes back to the Dail…

Heard on RTE: First voice: “I think you have to be a brave man to hoist Mary O’Rouke on your shoulders”. Second voice: “Oh, I think it is eminently doable, but you would have to be a brave man to do it”. Update: Mary herself on the debate between Bertie and Enda: “I woke up the next morning and the papers were telling me that he [Bertie] had shaded it, when it was obvious he had ‘schelped’ him [Enda]…” Mick …

Greens: Boyle out, Cuffe edges closer…

In Dun Laoghaire, Sean Barrett’s 3,440 surplus will probably take Green Party over the line. Richard Boyd Barrett, a chink of light for Sinn Fein next time round? But Dan Boyle loses in Cork South Central for the Greens. The Greens might just cannot crawl on to seven… Mick FealtyMick is founding editor of Slugger. One last round up…

Dan O’Sullivan asks a highly pertainent question: were we all judging the wrong debate? He argues that the poor quality of the minor game may have carried more weight than the face off between Enda and Bertie. Mairtin is counting on Donegal NE to pull something out of the fire for Sinn Fein. Gerry O, with Go on. Yeh Boy Yeh!. And Sarah rips loose with that now morally unblemished SSIA windfall. Luntz: this is about as complicated as it gets for any country’s electorate…

Again on RTE: Frank Luntz reckons that ‘Pub politics…’ is the key to Bertie’s success… “People were angry with him, and they like they way they took it…” He’s clearly struggling with how his idea of a contract with the people, he sold to Enda and Fine Gael didn’t seem to work… “You are much more civil, you are much more decent to each other…” Mick FealtyMick is founding editor of Slugger. “For all his divisiveness, he electrified Irish politics.”

Harry Magee on the resignation of Michael McDowell… Bertie’s just said, “…it’s a tough night for all politicians… regardless of whether they are for Fianna Fail or any other party…” He says they have been out canvassing since September… It was the Debate that won it… ‘we you get the opportunity to spend half an hour to explain it (the Irish economy)… Name check Thomas Byrne… Lots of reference to the internet… big pitch for the youth… And on the …

SWP candidate running close…

Richard Boyd Barrett will make it close to the end of the reckoning. Not bad for a member of the Socialist Workers Party… It’s likely to be a tight scrap between him and sitting Green TD, Ciaran Cuffe, though Ciaran should nose it relatively easily on transfers… Mick FealtyMick is founding editor of Slugger. Flannery still calling it close…

Frank Flannery is tipping Fianna Fail to get 76 seats. As an aside he’s assuming Padraig MacLochlainn for Donegal NE and O’Snodaigh get in to allow Sinn Fein to keep five Deputies. Technically, if his Fine Gael party could sow together an alliance of any and everyone else (including doubtful converts like Jackie Healy Rae and Beverley Cooper-Flynn), they could give Enda the ‘Taoiseachship’. That would leave them at the same figure. Vincent Browne says the simplest way out for …

Paving over the past

Spotted by Best of Both Worlds. Poet Paul Muldoon, recent interview noted here, picks up on the contrasting approaches from the once-and-future-Toaiseach to two historic sites in Ireland.. the Tara-Skryne Valley – where the discovery of a national monument has meant work on the M3 motorway has, probably only temporarily, been halted – and the Boyne Battle site – where a tourist centre is being built.. to the delight of certain visitors.. It seems strange, to say the least, that …

Politics.ie: McDowell out on the next round…

David Cochrane beats RTE to the ‘inevitable’ conclusion… McDowell is 1100 votes behind Gormley, yet only 950 votes remain to be transferrered, thus he is certain to be eliminated in the next count. Foregone conclusion. Then: Looks like the twitter text I sent out a few minutes ago was read out by a pundit on RTE Radio 1. Worth bookmarking to hear if there is any official acknowledgement of that!!! H/T, to the ever vigilant SuperSoupy!! Mick FealtyMick is founding …

Donegal NE: Rests on FF transfers…

This was always going to be tight, but it remains to be seen who is going to be the victim of FF’s strategic defence. With so many votes staying inside the FF camp, the odds must be on it remaining with them.
