Don’t worry- be happy

That’s it, I think I’ll just do happy stories from now until everyone becomes sane again after the July fortnight. I tried to get one of William Crawley’s free books in the July book read on Will and Testament, but they were all gone. I rather like the idea of the virtual book club, it means you dont have to do canapes for 10. As one of the few who didnt evacuate Northern Ireland this year, I think a good …

The curse of the Irish…

Nice column in the Glasgow Herald, in which their Dublin correspondent talks about where the Irish money has been going in this World Cup… WITH the row about who Scots should support in the World Cup rumbling on, we asked our Dublin correspondent how the Irish coped with not being in the finals either. He tells us: “There was early interest in Trinidad and Tobago on the basis that they also are small islands who like a good party. There …

Once English, now a British referee…

This from the BBC site earlier today. I remember meeting up with a Scottish family in Switzerland back in the early eighties. They were still grumping about how the BBC kept claiming Glasgow Celtic as the first British team to win the European Cup back in 1967, and then it was wall to wall England when Bestie, Charlton and the rest won it a year later for England United. With Graham Poll, the ref who gave out three Yellow Cards …

Some of us earn them!!

I have more than a passing interest in the graduation ceremonies at Queens this year, so I’ve been checking out to see who the Honorary Graduands are, as I usually have no idea who the person is or what they’re on stage for. This year, Queens has kindly chosen people I recognise, and I see Miss Fitz will be sharing the podium on Monday night with Robert Fisk. Other recipients will include Mickey Harte, Eamonn Holmes, Angela Feeney, Jonathan Porritt …

Now this is serious

I have lived through some troubled times, and seen some scary headlines in my day. But in all my years, nothing made my blood run cold like the headline I saw this evening as I came in: Cadbury’s recalls over 1 million chocolate bars. As I have mentioned before, I am a traditionally built lady, as Alexander McCall Smith would say, and prone to the odd square of chocolate. It seems that Cadbury’s quality control found traces of salmonella in …

Bush: Sunday, Bloody Sunday

Funky, inspiring footage from the US Congress as you have never seen it before (unless you’ve seen this footage of course), and from the much maligned current President GW Bush… Enjoy it. Northern Ireland gets a groupp of its own…

Following the Belfast Telegraph’s World Cup county for country story, one of our occasional readers, wondered why we hadn’t spotted the following nuance:From ‘Steve’ I didn’t see a recommendation for your audience to watch Group C (presumably for Confrontation). In it we have: Ivory Coast: Their Gold White and Green tricolour is just like the Irish but backward – a bit like the SDLP. Serbia & Montenegro: These guys have decided the only way forward is through partition – as …

If you couldn’t be there yourself..

If you couldn’t make it to the V&A exhibitions’ private viewing, and I know some people couldn’t *ahem* [Hey! where was my invite? – Ed] The First Post has the photos, and comments “The V&A’s private view for three exhibitions, Sixties Fashion, Sixties Graphics and Che Guevara: Revolutionary and Icon, had everything a Bollinger Bolshevik could wish for” – although it should be said that it does look somewhat C-list compared to the other Exhibition’s party this week.. [I know …

Quote of the weekend..

At least.. Following England’s World Cup warm-up match against Jamaica at Old Trafford [6 – 0 btw – Ed].. Belfast-born ITV News presenter Andrea Catherwood on the 5.45pm UK-wide news programme, speaking to a reporter outside the ground, on the quality of the opposition – “Jamaica.. well, they’re not Northern Ireland, are they?” heh heh Pete Baker

Republic loses the top of Donegal (again)!

In another slow newsday story, Jo Duffy on RTE this afternoon lifted the lid on a FAS leaflet doing the rounds of the EU, which apparently has a map in which the most of Donegal north of Letterkenny (don’t panic Damien) is annexed by Northern Ireland. We haven’t seen said offending article, but it won’t be the first time someone in Dublin has forgot to keep the bit of the south that’s north of the north where it belongs. Cecilia …

Sugar and Spice and all things nice…..

Well, we know that’s what little girls are made of. Which means that boys are made of frogs and snails and puppy dogs tails, well at least the boys on Slugger. For a while now, we seem to have been missing the old feminine perspective, and there seemed to be a vacancy, so yours truly has stepped up to the plate and hopes to make a contribution to the site. I dont intend to focus on ‘female’ issues, as I …

Ulster Protestants and the Goths at school…

Why is your female companion dressed as a bishop in a religiously sensitive area?

It’s always better to know the local laws. The Irish Times reports on why the Vatican has lodged an official complaint with RTÉ. “The three-man crew of RTÉ1’s Would You Believe series was shooting footage for a programme on the role of women in the church.”.. which they, unfortunately, decided would be best illustrated with footage of an Italian actress.. dressed as a bishop.. at least, that’s the official story.. *ahem* From the Irish Times report – The three-man crew …

Ulster says….

Got to be a slow news day, so here’s one of my favorites in the Flickr NI group of pictures. This one is from Plastic Jesus, who reckons it’s his Cartier-Bresson moment. It looks like it’s taken on the Waterside in Derry. Not everything in Northern Ireland relates obsessively to politics – I guess? Mick FealtyMick is founding editor of Slugger. one of his most ambitious works

Via TCAL. A late addition to the Beckett Centenary celebrations.. at The Onion According to literary critic Eric Matheson, who praised the work for “the bare-bones structure and bleak repetition of what can only be described as ‘nothingness,’” the play represents somewhat of a departure from the works of Beckett’s “middle period.” But, he said, it “might as well be Samuel Beckett at his finest.” “It does feature certain classic Beckett elements, such as sparse stage directions, a mysterious quality …
