The next steps in achieving lasting peace and unity

With Sinn Féin most likely well and truly out of the governmental loop south of the border for the next five years following the recent Dáil elections, I thought it might be helpful to see what Fianna Fáil have on their agenda when it comes to furthering the unification objective. Fianna Fáil says in its election manifesto (PDF file) that “the achievement of lasting peace and unity on our island remains the most important objective” of the party. Without peace …

At the same time, a new report reveals (subs needed) that more than 17,500 children aged between seven and 17 were referred to An Garda Síochána’s juvenile diversion programme for young offenders in 2005. Not too late for Ireland to take a lead in planning and design

The Irish Republic has the fastest growing population in Europe, rising at a rate of 2.5% per annum. It is estimated that the figure will reach 5 million before 2020, especially with between 70,000 to 100,000 immigrants arriving every year. This burgeoning population growth has led to an unrelenting boom in housing output with almost half of all dwellings in Ireland now having been planned and delivered by the private sector since 1990. Unfortunately a lack of planning has led …

DUP continues its campaign for the Irish who are culturally British

Gregory Campbell of the DUP continues to campaign for what he believes are the large numbers of southerners living in Northern Ireland who are just itching to take up naturalised British citizenship. This even though just 270 out of an estimated population of 40,000 took up the option last year. Campbell blames red tape for the low uptake and believes huge numbers would be prepared to hold a British passport. “There are thousands who want this and would be entitled …

Property bubble finally bursting or the hoped for soft landing?

Indicators seem to show the Irish Republic’s booming property market finally seems to be running out of steam, no doubt helped by the fact that first-time buyers are most certainly feeling the pinch of six interest rate hikes between December 2005 and December 2006. You certainly know something is up when Dublin developers offer free mortgages for six months to first-time buyers. While Twinlite Developments is offering its mortgage deal to attract customers, Gannon Homes is offering free kitchen appliances, …

Myers on those sulking, self-pitying Scots

Kevin Myers has it in for the Scots in his column this week in the Irish Independent, saying if they want independence then they should have it.
