Keeping rights and politics separate

Steven King argues (archive only) that the Human Rights Commission’s proposals for a new Bill of Rights for Northern Ireland are the result of a consensus between a particularly narrow range of interests. Note: This is a re-post from the lost archives of Slugger from last April. He concludes: “Never forget the old advice that if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Human rights are crucially important. But the notion of human rights is devalued if …

No Pope here, says BBC…

THE BBC has reportedly dropped plans for ‘Popetown’ – a comedy set in a fictional Vatican – because of fears that Catholics will be offended. I wonder if it came anywhere near as sacrilegious as the excellent ‘Father Ted’, which was rejected by RTE before Channel 4 broadcast this cult classic. No sign of progress in Lisburn…

Although the leadership of the DUP breaks down old barriers, at a Council level the message is somewhat different. The SF website reports: Sinn Fein Lisburn Council group leader, councillor Paul Butler has said that the refusal of DUP mayor Cecil Calvert to extend the invitation to this years mayoral banquet to Sinn Fein councillors not only breaches council protocol it also highlights the inability of the DUP to take even the first steps towards sharing power with nationalists and …

US support for integrated education…

IT’S a common reaction from Americans when they learn that 95 percent of pupils in Northern Ireland attend, to all intents and purposes, single-identity schools – sheer disbelief at the lack of integration. US Envoy Mitchell Reiss’s strong support for integrated education echoes his predecessor Richard Haass’s decision to put his own hand in his pocket to help out (last page) with a major donation. Barbara Stephenson, the recently-departed American Consul General, also made her support vocal for integrated education. …

Blair pace-maker

Yes that’s ‘pace-maker’, not ‘peace-maker’ – or at least “a device to steady an irregular heartbeat” – which actually seems to mean a 90 minute “non-surgical procedure under local anaesthetic”. However, if that doesn’t work… According to the BBC report, last year’s health scare has recurred in the last two months… mmm.. now what’s been happening that could have contributed to that, I wonder… Oh, and one more term and that’s it… Gordon.. Oh, Gordon! Slugger O'TooleA general account used …

Charter debate: more questions than answers

The e-debate has been slow to start, but there’s been some interesting questions that have arisen out of the first few days of discussion. Here’s a short outline of some of the main points so far. Colin Harvey will have more questions tomorrow. The discussion so far has raised more questions than answers. The primary one being whether we really need an all island charter when, in theory at least, the European Convention on Human Rights already covers both parts …

Church to blame for breakdown of families?

When I met Eammon McCann for the first time at Leviathan last week I discovered, much to mine and the audience’s surprise, that he retains a deep and abiding interest in Ancient Greek and the Cannon Law of the Catholic Church – even if there’s little affection for the latter. This week he argues that the Catholic church has had a more corrosive effect on family life than the current target of the Christian right in the US, the sex …

DUP says prepare for change…

Interesting statement just issued by Gregory Campbell, in which he tells Sinn Fein and the SDLP to prepare for change. It’s primarily noteable as a nicely weighted inversion of an earlier nationalist narrative that Unionists were naturally averse to change? DUP want governments to bolt decomm down

The DUP delegation is off to Dublin this morning to meet the Ahern boys, Bertie and the new broom at the DFA, Dermot. Glenn Reynolds, a closet liberal?

I’ve long had a suspicion that Neo Con is simply code for Kennedy Democrats frustrated with the slowness of social revolution. It doesn’t exactly prove the premise, but now Glenn’s gone over to the dark (ie: liberal, Guardian-reading) side, I’m tempted to believe it! Keeping politics going in government

As Labour meets in Brighton for its annual party conference, Tom Kelly’s been considering the difficulty in keeping the new Labour project moving, whilst staying in government. He also makes an interesting comparison between Labour and the trade union movement on one hand, and the UUP and the Orange Order on the other. By Tom Kelly As Labour delegates gather in Brighton, it would seem that the burden of office is becoming too much for some of them. Somehow they …
