POTD – The Republic of Conscience

Another poster from www.upstart.ie

I really hope that the arts organisations here can do something like this for the forthcoming local elections in May.

I spotted a few of these during last years General Election and one adorns my kitchen wall

From the Republic of Conscience by Seamus Heaney

  • Who is Heaney? Is it Seamus? Who are Heaney’s people?

  • Thanks, MP. Can I suggest you put the link in the opening post? I wonder what percentage of the Irish electorate would be familiar with the piece. I’d never heard of it; I’ll reflect on it later.

  • You can and i have 🙂

  • Moochin, are you a member of the Church of Roam? It sort of fits your pseudonym and Seamus’ olde worlde – roamin in the gloamin 🙂

You may find this hard to believe but that denomination is an entry by a Co Armagh farmer in a 1901 Irish census form. He lists William B as his neice.

  • I’ll have to look into that but my people are from Armagh farming stock 🙂

  • Just google “church of roam” armagh – and browse at your leisure. If you leave out Armagh you’ll find some of the diaspora!

  • Ode to the Good Old Days? And Seamus – having writ – moved on, onwards and upwards. At least, Seamus wasn’t a dangerous poet like Padraig Pearse!
