A new take on pride and prejudice…

SO fair play to Lord Mayor of Belfast Gavin Robinson for being the first from the DUP to take a seat on the panel of Belfast Pride Talks Back debate. I’m sure he doesn’t feel any less straight the morning after the night before, and the move certainly upstaged the rest of the panel. Whether it actually means anything in terms of their policies remains to be seen. As a mayor for everyone, will Gavin be at the Gay Pride parade, …

Clinkers, Rivets and Flatcaps: Celebrating Titanic and the Men Who Built Her.

The panicked screams of the dying could be heard long after Titanic broke in two and finally slipped under the icy waters of the North Atlantic. By the time the last voices faded and the inky dark became silence once more, over 1,500 souls had met a terrifying and lonely fate. The disaster was a human tragedy from start to finish, the consequences made even more poignant by a sequence of poor and hurried decision making from conception to demise. …

Laganside loose ends: an FOI, a disappearing Assembly question & a zipwire across the Lagan

In the end the Department of Social Development took a shade longer than the four weeks permitted under FOI to answer my simple questions about their investments in the Laganside Events and Laganside Community Activity Grants. Figures for the 2011/12 grants for the two funds were supplied in the meantime through another DSD source. But that left the remaining query asking for the total amount spend on the Laganside grants over the years the schemes have been in operation. The …

Tee and Toast

Madame Oui and I had fun all day today, and I was pleased with several photos I shot throughout the day. This isn’t the most artistic (that probably goes to this one), but it is the one that represented the highlight of the day — chatting with the owner of Tee and Toast, with their wonderful and charming designs incorporating familiar items and local icons. Claire’s great — say hi next time you’re round at St George’s Market, Belfast. And …

Austerity? What austerity? The MTV EMA goodie bag, I mean goodie suitcase

MTV EMA European Music Awards goodie bag/suitcase

It’s good to see that as debt and austerity envelopes the European Union, the presents thrust upon the artists and ‘VIPs’ attending the MTV European Music Awards in Belfast this weekend are reflecting the pressures felt by those who listen to their music … I hope they’ve all booked an extra piece of hold luggage on their return flights, otherwise Ryanair are going to fleece them for an extra suitcase! MTV today revealed the contents of the 2011 MTV EMA …

POTD – Billy Bragg and Occupy Belfast

Walking past the camp yesterday i heard what sounded like a familiar voice. When i looked to check it was indeed Billy Bragg who was in town to play a gig at the Empire last night. Something about Mary, first Presidential candidate in Belfast (video added)

Residents of Northern Ireland may not have vote as of right, but I suspect there are more than a few Irish denizens of Belfast who’ll be sneaking back to the Donegal ranch or running down to the ma’s in Dublin to cast their unofficial ex pat vote. Anyhoo, Mary Davis is the first candidate to platform in Belfast… She’ll be at the Crescent Arts Centre this evening between 6 and 7:30pm… Update: I hope he’ll go on serving as Deputy …
