Mrs Bradley, 47, has been the MP for Staffordshire Moorlands since May 2010, and became a Home Office minister in 2014.

Wikipedia says she is a Man City supporter. I find that disturbing.

    At least she can count.

I wonder is she connected to Dominic, sinead and PJ ,a distant cousin perhaps?

  • Croiteir

    she is married

  • Gerry Lynch

Another high profile appointment with just the sort of diplomatic nous and intellectual horsepower needed to manage a region in political crisis that is about to be bumped harder by Brexit that anywhere else in Europe.

  • Kieran Hickey

You think English people would have a problem with this?

Karen Brady (née O’Keefe) born 12 March 1970 in Slane, County Westmeath is an Irish Fianna Fail politician. She has been a Member of the Dail for Longford since the 2010 general election. In 2018 she was appointed the Irish Secretary of State for Northern England by the Taoiseach Leo Varadker.

  • She speaks very highly of you, Gerry…

  • murdockp

We are all learning. Who is her husband connected to on these shores then, Bradley takes him back to Down.

  • file

What was her crime? Has she annoyed May in some way? I mean, surely she has done nothing to deserve this posting?

Then get off your backside and get to 50% of NI votes in any election to call for a Border Poll and stop the whinging ? Nah – The GFA does not suit me anyone ? Mopery at its finest !

  • ‘island man

It is a pretty awful state of affairs when foreigners have to be appointed to govern places where they don’t come from. It’s an even sadder state of affairs when people like yourself are happy enough to let it happen.

Where did I say that IM ? Only solution is a Devolved Power Sharing Assembly but guess who brought that down and now has a bunch of red lines to stop democracy working in NI and an Assembly Operating ?

  • T.E.Lawrence

Sssh you, don’t mention that she also supports another blue team who come from Windsor Park, Belfast or the Shinner Bots will go into Melt Down and Mopery already ? Flash McVeigh is on the case already as she as just walked of the plane at George Best Airport with her Linfield scarf on !

  • ‘island man

We’d still have a Secretary of State who the buck would stop with even if the assembly was up and running. Devolution in parts of the UK has become more of a convenience for WM as they are unburdened of the donkey work, with a little autonomy thrown in to make the kids feel like they have more independence than they actually have.

Unlike Brokenshire, hopefully Ms Bradley will be even-handed in her dealings with both SF and the DUP. Oh…wait….her party is in government in the UK because…….

  • Tom in London

Has she ever been anywhere in Ireland at all?

  • Aarrnn

I agree it is weird, though Northern Ireland is weird. The answer to your question is undoubtedly “Yes, English people would have a problem with this”

  • T.E.Lawrence

I am sure you could make a SoS only a visitor for tea at the castle if the will was there by all the locals to share the place and spread the loot equally ?

They might well because after all the Republic isn’t in the UK, and the central govt. isn’t formed for the UK in Dublin.

There’s a Secretary of State for Wales and Scotland too, so what is so strange about having one for Northern Ireland?

  • Reader

She has been in the cabinet for years. Do you want one of the current big hitters instead – Boris? Liam? DD?
In any case, her role is to try to persuade our numpties to keep talking to each other and occasionally to remind the PM that we exist in case Arlene forgets to mention it.

island man: It is a pretty awful state of affairs when foreigners have to be appointed to govern places where they don’t come from.
Easily fixed. Appoint one of the DUP MPs to the role.
(Though Karen Bradley is a UK citizen – like the DUP MPs – and therefore is not actually foreign). It’s really down to whether your tribalism is stronger than your anglophobia.

  • ‘island man

No anglophobia here, my partner is English, but English people are from a different country and on a whole have a very different outlook on things, so shouldn’t be governing us in any form. Why would you appoint a DUP MP to the role, so the OO could walk down Garvaghy Road in the summer?

  • ‘island man

Yup, all 6 million or so locals

  • Kieran Hickey

Haven’t you been moping non-stop over Barry McElduff? I wouldn’t talk about “mopery” if I were you.

(Let’s see if this meets the censors approval or not.)

  • Reader

island man: Why would you appoint a DUP MP to the role, so the OO could walk down Garvaghy Road in the summer
Well you don’t like ‘foreigners’ having the job, so it needs to be an Irish person, and an MP. It’s either the DUP or Lady Hermon. The DUP aren’t actually in coalition with the Government party, but do have a confidence and supply arrangement. So it looks like the DUP get it.
    Or who else?

  • Cadogan West

This is just another inept appointment. KB has only a Sky deal under her belt, I doubt that would qualify her to sort out NI. Whining and dining SF and DUP in 5 star hotels is wasting time and money. The mothballs have already been delivered to Stormont which will not see the light of day until the next GE at the earliest or heaven forbid the next Millennium. Ironically DR probably could deliver the Irish Language Act and other things which Stormont could never do in a month of Sundays. Keep looking at HP sauce in Private Eye for updates.

  • Cadogan West

No not even kissed the Blarney Stone.

  • Cadogan West

KB is Karen Bradley not Brady why would Brits be interested in her?

  • Cadogan West

The ultimate blame for who is responsible for the political and budgetary shambles we are constantly in lies with the Northern Ireland electorate.

As Cassius says in Act I of Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar: “The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars, but in ourselves.”

  • Cadogan West

KB is not a foreigner only in the NI sense does this seem a problem.

  • Cadogan West

Karen Brady has nothing to do with NI she is not in the May Cabinet.

  • Mimi Balguerie

Lady Hermon would be an excellent SoS. Great shout.

(on a tangential note, is it actually required that the SoS must be an MP, or can the PM appoint anyone to the role?)
