Ask us anything (within reason)…

ask, who, what

There have been lots of questions about the comments policy so I thought I would give you the opportunity to ask any questions about the comments or how Slugger works generally (or does not work). Slugger has very little structure and I freely admit we make it up as we go along. We know we are not perfect so we do welcome your suggestions and ideas for improvement. We have a lot of very smart readers and I am keen …

Slugger had over a million readers in 2017. Thank you :-)

The good ship Slugger had a great 2017. We had over a million readers over the course of the year, 1343 posts, and over 6 million pages of content read. There were around 115,000 comments posted to the site and we read every single one of them (yeah right). For those of you who are about to comment that it says one or two thousand readers at the top of most posts how can it be so many? You need …

Slugger page views up 7.4% in 2014.

2014 has been a great year for Slugger, we have had all the major party leaders on the site in one shape or form. Along with this the Secretary of State and her Labour shadow have taken the opporunity to engage with us. We have developed the Slugger Soapbox platform and have opened it up to any politician/figure wanting to promote a cause or highlight an issue. The site is more nimble due to the excellent work that Brian O’Neill …

Hyperlinks, italics and other clever stuff

When I started commenting on slugger a number of years ago I was a bit less sad, had a bit more hair and was away from home a lot. Now I am at home every evening, have even less hair, am much more sad and have no closer a relationship with my family. All this is secondary to my involvement with slugger: I appreciate few republicans will have much sympathy, nor many loyalists and probably precious few other people. Right …

Slugger’s Big Heid Coont Breakfast 2011

DUP strategist Lee Reynolds answering questions at Slugger Big Election breakfast - photo by Mr Ulster

A slightly smaller crowd that previously gathered at 8am this morning up on the top floor of the Europa Hotel. After a quick plug from sponsor Mark Prentice (MD of Firmus Energy – who can help you to Keep ‘er lit) a number of guests popped up to the podium to make their comments on the Assembly and AV referendum results and take questions from the bacon butty-guzzling guests. Asked to comment on the role of Twitter in politics, Conall …

Shhh….it wasn’t the shinners

Five days after the murder of Bobby Moffatt – claims of UVF involvement and mass intimidation of people in the Shankill area but Slugger’s expanded team has managed a grand total of one blog on the subject. Pity it wasn’t a friend of someone related to a 2nd cousin of a sister of a guy that used to know Gerry Adams’, joiner’s sacked plumber’s, former school friend – that would have warranted many blogs. Blank

Do you want to write for Slugger O’Toole?

Now we have moved over to the new site, we can be a little more flexible in providing writing slots for one off or occasional contributors: as you’ll see from the Derry essay series, and some of the new voices we’ve begun to ‘promote’ from the comment zone. I’m quite keen that we develop this much further, particularly in areas where we have perceived shortfalls in perspective. To that end, I am keen to give greater voice to women (our …

Slugger Stratagem Election Breakfast – what they’re talking about this morning

David Ford watching Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg speaking on BBC News election programme

This morning, Stratagem and Slugger hosted a post-election breakfast in Belfast’s Europa Hotel. I’ve tidied up the proceedings and added a couple of brief voxpops with contributors. Passages in “direct quotes” are cleaned up verbatim comments, the rest captures the gist of their points. 0825 Mick Fealty kicks off and welcomes people. 0828 Brendan McMenamin (Derry~Londonderry UK City of Culture 2013) – “New [political] stories are emerging this morning” … and that’s the story of the City of Culture bid …
