McGuinness’ hero on royal visits…

JAMES Connolly is an undoubted hero of Martin McGuinness’ – the deputy First Minister even invoked him in a speech as as recently as last month. But I wonder if this icon of republicanism’s ‘patriot dead’ would have approved of McGuinness meeting the Queen? Here’s some of Connolly’s thoughts on a previous royal visitor to Ireland, King George V in 1911. Different rules for a different era? Knowing from previous experience of Royal Visits, as well as from the Coronation … Read more

SF Mayor of Cashel who made history by shaking hands with the Queen has died

Amongst the plethora of Orange-tinged posts on Slugger this week, there’s room to highlight that today’s Belfast Telegraph notes the death of the Sinn Fein councillor “who made history by shaking hands with the Queen”. Michael Browne, who was Mayor of Cashel in Co Tipperary, died on Saturday night following a long battle with cancer. “Not so much the rise of a new Scottish sentiment, but the gradual decay of what it meant to be British in Scotland”

Thanks to Peter for this acute report on the strange disappearance of British identity in Scotland from Alan Little for last night’s Newsnight… Here’s the real kicker, in almost the last line: “Independence no longer means separation in any meaningful sense, and that’s the game changer.” See also Gerry Hassan‘s take on it… Mick FealtyMick is founding editor of Slugger. So Brian Cowan has finally announced the Queens trip is definitely on.  It’s been something of an open secret around Leinster House since last February, and Fianna Fail at large it seems. (Just when was he planning to tell the rest of us?) For a good example of how far down the list briefing the press comes, see this little fundraiser for the local Newtownshandrum Junior B Hurling Team 2010 posted on Facebook in the last few days: With the … Read more

SDLP: I swear they are real republicans

On May 12th I posted a mocked up version of SDLP MPs making their solemn declaration/affirmation of allegiance to ‘Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, her heirs and successors’ It was variously described by pro-SDLP contributors as a ‘new low’ for Slugger (x4), ‘inane’, ‘masturbatory, a ‘steaming log’, ‘lowering the tone’ and even resulted in one claim of a commenter leaving the site. So I apologise in advance for directly linking Margaret Ritchie actually taking that affirmation to her Queen: And the … Read more
