Joint Exhibition – ‘Elections 2014’ (Ian Knox)

Slugger’s BIG Election Hangover is happening this Friday – May 30, 8pm, at the Hudson Bar. A night of political debate and entertainment that’ll help us wean ourselves off the election campaign. The bill includes Simon Hamilton MLA (see the famous Ian Knox turkey cartoon above) who’ll be there to reflect on the election campaign. There’ll be a look back on the impact of local government reform. Derek McCallan of NI Local Government Association (NILGA) will speak about the importance the #participate14 campaign. Tim McGarry will then …

Cartoon – Selective abstentionism

This cartoon was inspired by a piece over on eamonnmallie.com where Slugger’s David McCann writes that the State Visit means no end to Sinn Fein abstentionism. Though I’ve heard a few lone voices say otherwise. Hand-shaking, soup-taking and toasting were long abstained from. Thoughts? Cartoon – The organ-grinder

In the 19th and 20th Century organ-grinders were often paid to keep silent, given the repetitious nature of the music. Not much chance of that in this instance. Peter Robinson, keeping the press accountable – Caption Competition

Never mind the “unpleasant odour” rising from Northern Ireland’s libel law (and the urge to censor), there’s something a little stinky coming from Peter Robinson’s call for the media to show more support for Stormont. As Orwell said, “journalism is printing what someone else does not want printed: everything else is public relations.” Surely we don’t need more photos of politicians standing around with cheesy grins, Stormont’s main output? I look forward to seeing your captions for the empty speech …

Budget 2013: A missed opportunity

George Osborne for the first time appeared nervous. No Chancellor in recent memory, apart from perhaps Gordon Brown, in the early years of New Labour appeared so cocksure. For three years Osborne has had to dress up bad news as good news. He cherry picked the statistics that suited him best, of course all Chancellors do this but this was something that Osborne attacked his predecessors for. Yes, the Coalition came into tough times economically but they are now three …
