Cartoon - One Year On, Brian John Spencer

Bit overblown, there was one idiot who attacked a police officier but no Moderate should feel perturbed by anything else that went on.

  • ayeYerMa

Is Brian John Spencer going to get a new record? It seems he is obsessed with aiding the Republican cause via endlessly attacking the only people who stand up for a stable Northern Ireland.

No idea of his background, but sounds very much a case of the fatal self-destructive disease, Middle-class-prodititis.

    “aiding the republican cause..”

What the Dickens are you talking about?

    Please explain.

    I wait with bated breath.

  • Son of Strongbow

    AG,

In what other context would it be appropriate to depict members of a protest group with simian-like features?

Surely you do have to have any degree of sympathy with the flag protestors aims to feel some discomfort with the primary line of attack that is deployed against them that focuses on their perceived low intelligence or poor educational attainment?

This latest offering from Spencer is not a pretty picture on so many levels.

  • Son of Strongbow

That’s ‘not have any degree of sympathy’ – new phone, early Christmas present.

  • Am Ghobsmacht

    SoS

I’m still getting used to my new phone, just when I finally mastered predictive text I get me one of them newfangled gizmos and I’m back to square one, so I empathise entirely.

I see your point about the drawing, fair enough.

But with regards to AYM’s comment, I fail to see how this is aiding republicanism, he didn’t even home in on the angle you highlighted let alone explain how they are the backbone of a stable Northern Ireland.

I would have thought that people opposed to provocative murals, KAT/KAH banners/graffiti, petrol bombs, tunes about killing people of a different religion, antagonistic displays or general ‘heavy & uncool’ behaviour would be in the corner of ‘stable Northern Ireland’, not the people who endorse the aforementioned destabilising behaviour.

That’s what I’d like him/her to explain to me, who’s really doing the most harm to Northern Ireland?

I also have a sweepstake running on how many man-plays he/she deploys in the course of his/her answer, I’ve a tenner riding on 3 insults or man-plays.

Care to place a bet? Tenner a pop.

  • Son of Strongbow

I do not agree with aym’s argument that this is an aid to “republicanism”, or as it manifests in the NI context, catholic nationalism.

Nor do I have any issue with challenging the machinations of the flag protestors – they are certainly worthy of robust challenge on many aspects of their activities.

My unease is solely centred on the tendency amongst many, in the main nationalists I have to say, who gleefully concentrate their unpleasant ad hominem attacks pejoratively on the ‘type’ of people they judge are involved in the protests.

Btw, not a betting sort so I’ll hold on (tightly) to my tenner.

  • I posted this on the Rising of the Undead thread but it was intended for here:

    “When can their glory fade?
O the wild charge they made!
    All the world wondered.
    Honor the charge they made,
    Honor the Light Brigade,
    Noble two thundered.”

I doubt very much if the unionist and nationalist strong-men will be much influenced by doodlers from the leafy suburbs

  • Am Ghobsmacht

“I doubt very much if the unionist and nationalist strong-men will be much influenced by doodlers from the leafy suburbs”

You’d probably be right Nevin, but, he’s an influence on others and a good influence at that (imho).

At least he’s trying to improve things a bit and is a fresh departure from ‘the old ways’.

  • SK

How nice of SoS to take a break from ad hominem attacks in order to condemn ad hominem attacks.

A rotund woman, squeezed into a union flag dress, screaming on a dual carriageway. A grown man attending court dressed as Abu Hamza. A caravan in a housing estate with ‘civil rights camp’ painted on the side in Trotter-esque fashion. Of course people are going to laugh. What else can they do but laugh?

Such people don’t listen to reason. They perceive logic to be some kind of malevolent fenian invention. If humour is the only means that the silent majority- the people who simply want to get on with their lives- have of expressing their exasperation with these thugs, then fair enough. You can’t argue with stupid.

  • “a fresh departure from ‘the old ways’”

Am Ghobsmacht, I don’t recall Ray Davey resorting to satire/mockery or Sr Souboris commending it.

  • Am Ghobsmacht

    Nevin

Surely it’s difficult to imagine that a generation reared on ‘Have I got news for you’,’Bremner, Bird and Fortune’, ‘Brass Eye’, ‘The Day Today’, ‘Spitting Image’, ‘Blackadder Goes Forth ‘and many more besides could tackle politics without resorting to satire?

It may not be to everyone’s taste but I don’t see why the players in our game should be exempt from it.

  • Am Ghobsmacht, the hyperlink in 11:59 pm doesn’t appear to be working. The likes of Ray Davey and Sr Souboris IMO were ‘an influence on others and a good influence at that’.

Ray: “We hope that Corrymeela will come to be known as ‘the Open Village’, open to all people of good will who are willing to meet each other, to learn from each other and work together for the good of all.”

    and

Sr Souboris: “I personally learned a tremendous amount from their unselfishness. I only wish more people in our divided communities could experience how easy it is to love and live together once the will to do so is there”

  • Am Ghobsmacht

    Nevin

I have no doubt as to what you say, however, I don’t see the relevance here.

You posted it in response to my ‘old ways’ comment.

Are you saying that they’re the norm of ‘the old ways’?

    Not from my experience.

Also, looking at Sr Souboris comment, well, in the context of Brian John Spencer I would say he’s also working for people from both sides of the sectarian divide, so again, I genuinely don’t see where you’re going with this.

Just because he can be heavy hitting with his cartoons doesn’t mean he’s selfish or whatever you’re pertaining to.

  • redstar2011

SK- ” Trotter- esque!”, love it but reckon you are being a bit hard on the Trotters.

Lets be honest you only have to look at the type of people many of these ” fleggers” are to see how pathetic their ” cause” is

WKD bottle in hand rambling on about fictional ” civil rights” issues with every 2 nd word either ” fenians” or “themmuns”

And for those who think that pointing out such facts is a smug elitist approach- answer me this- would you want these types and their Del Boy caravan parked in your street?

  • Am Ghobsmacht, based on my own experience, I see no comparison whatsoever with the compassionate actions of those who Sr Souboris was praising.

  • Am Ghobsmacht

    Sorry Nevin

You’ve lost me, I don’t see any relevance between the topic in hand, your comments and my original comments, I shall have to put this down to my poor comprehension and admit that it’s all went straight over my head.

  • “I shall have to put this down to my poor comprehension and admit that it’s all went straight over my head.”

Don’t be too hard on yourself, Am Ghobsmacht; I’m sure there are key decision makers who have similar problems interpreting our political landscape.
