I need to say from the outset that the cartoon above is not mine, but the work of Norwegian cartoonist Morten Morland (@mortenmorland) who produces political cartoons for the London Times, The Spectator and many more esteemed publications. ‘Belfast Faces and Famous Places’ opened at Common Grounds (16-17 University Avenue) on June 7 and runs until mid-July. I studied law and french at university but couldn’t suppress the impulse to draw. Doodling as others transcribed lectures and lessons. The impulse was especially towards converting people and events into line and ink. So there’s a lot of QUB lecturers caught up in my sketchbook. In the week of Scarfe-gate it was great to see the View’s feature on Northern Ireland political cartoons. Though it was a little short… Cartoons are a powerful and emotive medium that tell a story in a way no words can. We have a great tradition of cartoonists here in NI and Ireland, from Rowel Friars and his acerbic pen, Ian Knox and his consistent wit to Martyn Turner and his bright and illustrated word play.
