Richard Madeley Highlights A Challenge for Unionism

Yesterday Sinn Féin President Mary Lou McDonald popped up on ‘Good Morning Britain’ to make her case to the English, Scottish and Welsh publics on the need for a referendum on Irish unity. Those of us who live in Northern Ireland and visit this blog are of course well familiar with her case but she surely saw the value in being given a platform to articulate those arguments to people who normally wouldn’t give Northern Ireland and its issues much thought. …

Casement Park gets £50 million pounds in Spending Review

The proposed redevelopment of Casement Park has been a regular feature on Slugger for a few years now. You can go all the way back to an article by Pete Baker from 2013 (wherein he quaintly describes the project as a ‘£70 million plan’), to our own Brian O’Neill railing against the project as a farce in 2017 (the madness was not stopped but it was stymied…which in hindsight was the worst possible option given it lead to costs steadily …

man sitting on boat selling different fruits

Here we go again. Two nuclear-armed neighbours, one disputed region, and yet another burst of airstrikes to keep the cycle alive. This time, it’s called Operation Sindoor—a fresh salvo from India targeting areas inside Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir. Delhi says it’s retaliation for a brutal militant attack that killed civilians in Indian-administered Kashmir. Pakistan calls it an act of unprovoked aggression. Same script, new headline. A horrific attack on unarmed tourists in a picturesque corner of Indian-administered Kashmir set this …

A Third First Minister? Further proposals for Stormont Reform

Stormont Parliament Buildings photo for Honest Visitor Guide to Belfast blog

Somewhere around 2005, Mark Durkan (then SDLP leader) coined the phrase ‘ugly scaffolding’ to refer to the ungainly political architecture which underpins the Good Friday Agreement, namely the need for mandatory coalition between ideological opposites, the designation system that categorises our MLAs as ‘Unionist’, ‘Nationalist’ or ‘Other’ and the system of mutual vetoes which ensures that if one of the big parties decides things are unfolding in a way they don’t entirely approve of, they can decide to pull the …

Fallout from Labour’s benefit changes in devolved regions

One of the bigger news stories locally this week has been the Labour government’s announcement that it is slashing the benefits budget in an effort to save five billion pounds a year by 2030. Theresa May can’t understand why Unionism backed Brexit

Former British Prime Minister Theresa May was in Belfast earlier this week where she addressed the Literific society at Queen’s University and answered questions. Unsurprisingly, people in the audience were interested to hear her thoughts on Brexit, given her two year premiership was dominated by her need to do a deal with the European Union, an endeavor ultimately derailed by difficulties over reconciling the status of Northern Ireland with Brexiteer desires for maximum separation. As ‘Belfast Live’ reports “During the …
