In the AI age, seeing and hearing are no longer believing…

The fake deepfake AI video of the Irish Presidential candidate Catherine Connelly pulling out of the race is a dark harbinger of things to come.

With AI tools becoming more powerful, it is extremely easy to create fake photos and videos. This is going to play havoc with our politics, particularly around elections.

Then there are the wider social issues, like the justice system. How can courts be assured that the ‘evidence’ they are seeing is real? Deepfake will be the new defence.

And expect to see deepfakes crop up from our Troubles. A photo or video of someone well-known will circulate, showing them doing something questionable.

Already, populist politicians like Trump scream ‘Fakenews!’ at any stories they do not like; now it will be ‘Deepfake!’.

For over 20 years, Slugger has been an independent place for debate and new ideas. We have published over 40,000 posts and over one and a half million comments on the site. Each month we have over 70,000 readers. All this we have accomplished with only volunteers we have never had any paid staff.

Slugger does not receive any funding, and we respect our readers, so we will never run intrusive ads or sponsored posts. Instead, we are reader-supported.
