Gerry Adams Libel Case Could Rack Up Legal Fees of ‘Several Million’ Pounds…

The Irish News reports:

Belfast-based litigation and media lawyer Olivia O’Kane said that with a case such as that taken by Mr Adams, “even getting to the door of the court alone could cost parties hundreds of thousands”. “That’s serious money, and you have to consider the associated costs, such as in this case flying a key witness over from Australia,” she told the Irish News. “Legal fees in Dublin are higher than NI, and sometimes higher than in London. As we’ve seen in this trial, the defence has two senior counsel, in NI you have one – so those fees are going to mount up significantly.” There are eye-watering sums involved. I would estimate in excess of a million at least, and depending, could even be several million and as a result deep pockets are required.”

If Gerry wins the license fee payers foot the bill, if Gerry loses ¯\_ (ツ)_/¯

There really has to be a better way of handling disagreements like this.

As this is a live case, can we avoid commenting on its specifics and keep it to the general subject of libel and dispute resolution.
