Arms find: 15 kilos of Semtex, guns, ammunition and gold painted replica pistol…

Screen Shot 2013-07-12 at 15.25.12You could conjure up a whole play on just one of several bizarre elements of is reportedly An Garda Siochana’s largest find of dissident arms… In the midst of all the real guns is a toy Smith and Wesson model painted gold… From the UTV report:

Gardaí said some of the weapons looked in poor condition and included Provisional IRA weapons that should have been decommissioned.

Fifteen kilos of Semtex and other bomb-making equipment, such as detonator cord and igniters, were seized.

Firearms including an Uzi sub-machine gun, a Glock semi-automatic pistol, revolvers, shotguns, a silencer and a Taser stun gun were also recovered.

Around 1,300 rounds of ammunition were also among the cache.

Interestingly, the semtex was of the older sort, so technically, well, in fact, this batch should have been decommissioned…

Excellent find by the Gardaí – well done.

  • Son of Strongbow

They haven’t gone away you know….and they’re armed!

  • Davy McFaul

Some of the stuff ‘Quartermaster General’ McKevitt walked away with in ’97?

    Excellent work by the Gardai.

  • Pete Baker

    Mick

    That’s a replica Smith and Wesson, not a ‘toy’…

They’re meant to look and feel like the real thing.

  • michael-mcivor

    Son of Strongbow-

    ” and they’re armed! “-

Not with those weapons which the Gardaí removed-

Looks like the dissidents are just spending their days painting their guns-what strange folk-

  • “this batch should have been decommissioned…”

It appears that the find took place on July 3. The Herald carried the story on July 7 and the Independent has raised concerns about the possible amount of Semtex still in circulation.

  • Son of Strongbow

Yea, whatever, “just spending their days painting their guns” (donated Provo guns surely); and planting bombs, and trying to murder police officers, and………….

  • Mick Fealty

    Thanks Pete.

  • For years–since 1995–we were told by Republicans and even some SDLP nationalists that all this concentration on decommissioning was a diversion away from the “real issues.” This demonstrates that John Major, David Trimble, et al. were correct in believing that these arms posed a real danger and needed to be decommissioned in a TRANSPARENT fashion so that we did not end up with an Irish version of Hezbollah in Northern Ireland that thought that it was first among equals because it was the resistance to British imperialism. Hopefully the PSNI and Garda can find the other caches of IRA arms that never got decommissioned before they are used to carry out further murders.

Gardaí said some of the weapons looked in poor condition and included Provisional IRA weapons that should have been decommissioned

I wonder which of the weapons they were?

  • Son of Strongbow

I suggest the Smith & Wesson. Nothing like a golden gun to accessorize one’s Armani suit.

  • michael-mcivor

    Son of Strongbow-

( donated Provo guns surely );-

According to the Gardaí those weapons were stolen of the Provos in 1998-and looking at the state of those guns they have not seen a lick of oil since that date-

  • ArdoyneUnionist

On this 12th of July I see the current republican terrorists are hosting weapons and semtex from other republican terrorists. To coin a phrase from a leading republican “they haven’t gone away ya know”!!! And I don’t think he was just referring to the weapons and semtex.

I believe this is possibly the only truthful statement that leading republican has ever made.

  • ArdoyneUnionist

Its OK folks, we have it from a weapons expert that the captured weapons are lacking oil. I wonder what part of semtex you add oil.

“Gardaí said some of the weapons looked in poor condition and included Provisional IRA weapons that should have been decommissioned

AU, can you answer the question I ask above?

  • iluvni

Any wonder the inventory wasnt published as promised by Blair and Ahern.
What’s the unionist parties excuse today for remaining in an Executive alongside the liars of Sinn Fein?

  • willieric

omg omg omg do you mean that not all provo armaments were decommissioned? what must those poor deluded observers think now?

  • ArdoyneUnionist

“I wonder which of the weapons they were?”

“AU, can you answer the question I ask above?”

Davy that’s easy the weapons and semtex that kill Innocent people.

  • kells

Was this stuff dumped? A collection of second rate gear.

  • Four handguns, six replicas, three shotguns, an air rifle, 1300 rounds of assorted ammunition, 15kgs of Semtex, and all of it in various states of advanced corrosion or decay. Largest “Dissident” arms seizure ever? Well until the next “largest ever”…

  • IanR

It brings to mind Colonel Gaddafi’s golden gun, and since he provided the Semtex in the first place…

  • Son of Strongbow

So it’s only a bunch of oul rubbish? Phew; and there’s the Gardai thinking it was dangerous.

Anyways next time PIRAnua plant one of their ‘decayed’ bombs or point a ‘rusty’ gun at someone I know of at least two volunteers ready to walk boldly forward to collect the garbage.

  • gendjinn

I thought WorldByStorm at Cedar Lounge Revolution had the best analysis of this episode.

    Salient points being:
    1. The PIRA publicly announced that dissidents had stolen weapons in a 1998 split. McKevitt was QM and split over the ceasefires.
    2. 15 kg out of 2 tonnes……
    3. Published over a week ago to distract from the HET criticisms but trotted out now?

  • Henry94

Good police work. Well done to all concerned and in particular to any citizens who did their patriotic duty by passing information to the police.
