IRFU urged to play RoI National Anthem at Rugby World Cup

Independent Dublin City Councillor Neil Ring is apparently to table a motion calling on the IRFU to play the RoI National Anthem at the Rugby World Cup in New Zealand. At away matches only Ireland’s Call is played (and infamously the IRFU decreed that when Ireland played at Ravenhill it was an away fixture). Mr. Ring is confident of getting his motion passed: anticipating the support of FF, SF and independent councillors. According to Mr. Ring: “I would be very disappointed if it wasn’t passed. I think right-minded city councillors will vote for it…….I don’t see why the IRFU are still refusing to play it at away grounds. It gives the impression that Ireland’s Call is our national anthem.”

Ireland is one country, divided, like east and west Germany used to be……

If Ireland became one sovereign state, like Germany is today, then it would no longer be a divided country…..Simples!

Interpretations of ‘country’ are not black and white. It the partition of Ireland endured for another 90 years it would still be, at least for nationalists, a divided ‘country’.

In the event, however unlikely it may seem for you, the Irish border disappeared Irish rugby wouldn’t change much. An agreed flag and anthem perhaps? Or is that already the case for the most part?

‘If’ and semantics, the facts remain.

Flags and anthems are what started this discussion and they are exactly the point, there is no agreed flag and anthem which represents the Irish rugby team. That would be like me saying that Northern Ireland has its own flag and anthem and so that represents all nationalists who live in NI – it doesnt and I wouldnt dream of it.

“If” the partition of Ireland endured for another 90 years it would still be, at least for nationalists, a divided ‘country’.

is what I meant to say

“the facts remain” that Ireland is a politically divided country? Or that NI is totally separate from the rest of Ireland?

I agree the flags and anthem issue needs addressing. How is the problem……because no matter what is done…..you guessed the rest
