European Soccer Draw

Pretty tough for both Irelands and Scotland. Best Welsh draw since 1958…

Group I: Spain, Czech Republic, SCOTLAND Lithuania, Liechtenstein
Group H: Portugal, Denmark, Norway, Cyprus, Iceland
Group G: ENGLAND, Switzerland, Bulgaria, WALES, Montenegro
Group F: Croatia, Greece, Israel, Latvia, Georgia, Malta
Group E: Netherlands, Sweden, Finland, Hungary, Moldova, San Marino
Group D: France, Romania, Bosnia-Hercegovina, Belarus, Albania, Luxembourg
Group C: Italy, Serbia, NORTHERN IRELAND Slovenia, Estonia, Faroe Islands
Group B: Russia, Slovakia, REPUBLIC OF IRELAND, FYR Macedonia, Armenia, Andorra
Group A: Germany, Turkey, Austria, Belgium, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan

  • Panic, these ones like it up em.

The Republic slightly/a good bit easier than NI I would say.

Wales if this young group of players reach some of their potential could put up a good fight for 2nd place.

Scotland V Czech Republic for 2nd place

England will/should win that group easily.

  • GavBelfast

Nice away trips for Northern Ireland, but an almost impossible task: one of the hardest top seeds (though they’re all good), probably the best 2nd and 4th seeds.

Still, they’ll give it a go – and any Italian city, Belgrade, Ljubljana and Tallinn are all attractive places to go. Thorshavn – no idea, but didn’t the Republic’s fans get starnded there or delayed from goinhg due to the sea-fog it often gets.

Difficult but could have been worse for the Republic and Scotland, so-so for Wales, a bit of sa gift for England by the looks of it.

  • David Crookes

Thanks, Dewi! Plenty to worry about in Group C.

  • Greenflag

    gav ,

I would’nt write off the Faroes just yet 😉

On April 5, 2009 former Republic of Ireland manager Brian Kerr was appointed new manager of the Faroes Island team.On September 9, 2009, Faroe Islands recorded their first competitive win since the 2002 World Cup qualification stage after beating Lithuania 2-1.

If they can beat Lithuania – they can beat NI 🙂

  • JohnM

I think Ireland have got the best group they could have hoped for, if you look at the other Pot 1&2 pairings.

  • riverlagan

Italy will be doing a lot of rebuilding after the World Cup, what with a new manager in place, plus retirees in the waiting; Cannavaro, Zombrotta, Camoranesi etc.

Serbia and Slovenia are solid teams, home and away, which Norn Iron cannot proclaim.

  • FitzjamesHorse

Good group for us…not so good for “Northern Ireland”

  • We’ll do well to “grab” 4th spot

It’s a stinker from a playing point of view, travel wise quite looking forward to it- renting a trawler for the Faroes, a tank for Belgrade.

  • the future is bright the future is orange

sheesh, crap group for NI. very good group for ROI. Remind me – how many sides go through?

  • Dewi

9 group winners, the best second plced team, the winners of 4 play offs between the other 8 second placed teams plus Poland and the Ukraine as hosts.

  • Stewart

Not a bad draw for Ireland. Could have been worse.

Tough draws for the north & Wales.

England should hope to top their group, but a few tricky away ties.

Scotland have a chance of sneaking second in their group.

    Betting to win Euro 2012

    England – 7/1
    Ireland – 66/1
    Scotland – 100/1
    Wales – 250/1
    North – 500/1

    To win group

    England – 2/5
    Ireland – 3/1
    Scotland – 9/1
    Wales – 16/1
    North – 20/1

  • iluvni

    Ireland?

  • FitzjamesHorse

    yes…..Ireland……visible from Space.

  • To win group

    North – 20/1

Presuming you mean Northern Ireland there Stewart, I’d be looking to change my bookmaker. Make it 200/1 and I’d be tempted.

  • USA

I think the Republic have a decent chance. They should be in it right to the last game. The North will finish 3rd or 4th in their group. There should be one Irish team so they actually have a chance of participating in a major tournament.
England should be fine but Switzerland and Bulgaria offer some hope.
Welsh will not qualify, nor will Scotland.

  • Chris Donnelly

Delighted with draw. We could- but won’t- top group, probably beat Russia at home and get away draw before dropping two points to Macedonians away. I’d expect another play off encounter, though by the looks at France’s group, can’t envisage a rematch in the playoffs in two years time.

Northern Ireland have touched for a bad draw- will do well to get in top three.

Scotland will ‘bravely’ fall at the final group hurdle (again) whilst English will stroll to the Finals, tanking a typivally poor Welsh side twice on the way…

  • Prionsa Eoghann

The north/Queens 11 disnae matter we know who ye are.

Our manager Levein has decided to invite back to the squad 3 of our currant buns/Queens 11, and 3 guys with bigger arrogant attitudes you will struggle to find. Hopefully it will focus the minds in a straight(seemingly) two way fight with the Czecks for 2nd place.

The sassenachs couldn’t have got an easier group if they had picked it themselves. And I am bloody troubled by the lack of self proclaimed world champion status eminating from their camp regarding South Africa. Let’s hope Terry doesn’t get horny again, wee wayne doesn’t spot any pensioners of his liking and Rio stays away from the Colombian marching powder. And if Bridge’s ex is up for a party somebody let her know I’m interested.

  • Framer

Could make a No. 2 if we take out the Faroes.

How did they ever get into the competitiopn anyway being part of Denmark?

  • FitzjamesHorse

Yeah and how did Wales and Scotland get in?

  • lamhdearg

the “free state” got the best draw out of all the HOME nations, was this fixed to make up for them not getting through to the worlds, on what was apparently the only time a handball was committed in the run up to a goal,

  • st etienne

“on what was apparently the only time a handball was committed in the run up to a goal”

I’m not too bothered for us – less crap teams to mess up against, more Goliaths to be felled. Looking forward to the Green & White invasion of Eastern Europe once more – although hopefully no Bratislava experiences will be encountered in Belgrade. A superb city in isolation, but well football tends to do things to people doesn’t it?

  • nick

‘the “free state” got the best draw out of all the HOME nations, was this fixed to make up for them not getting through to the worlds’

Err, no-the balls were just drawn out at random from the big bowls.

  • Prionsa Eoghann

    >>Yeah and how did Wales and Scotland get in?<< Fitzy ma man, I think you'll find that Scotland are founder members of world fitba and in any event unlike the Faeroes we are not an administrative part of Denmark.

  • Garza

Still tickles me that even thought we are well into the 21st century, people still can’t bring themselves to say “Northern Ireland” lol

“There should be one Irish team so they actually have a chance of participating in a major tournament.”

Nah their would be no difference. An all-Ireland team is going to win jack-shit and get into tournaments no more than what ROI gets into.

Both countries have great but seperate footballing traditions. Both got to the last eight in the world. NI was the smallest country to get into the World Cup until Trinidad and Tobago in 2006 and still is the smallest country to go to more that one world cup and the smallest country to reach the quarter finals, that is something to be proud of imo. NI don’t have the techincal ability but they have the heart and we therefore punch above our weight and give the odd bloody nose to football titans.

We won’t be going to Euro 2012 though, we basically have the group of death and if we get 3rd I’d be delighted.

ROI should qualify in that, if they don’t their is something seriously wrong. I hope they do.

  • Greenflag

    USA ,

‘There should be one Irish team so they actually have a chance of participating in a major tournament.’

In numerical terms I don’t believe it would make much difference . The odds of qualifying for a major competition for a one Ireland team might be say 20/1 instead of say 25/1 for the current Republic and 100/1 for NI . Which given that these major competitions arise every 4 years would mean that the Republic could hope to qualify for the World Cup every 5 World Cup Tournaments whereas a one Ireland team could hope to qualify every 4 World Cup Tournaments . The present NI can hope to qualify once or at most twice a century . Thus it’s conceivable that it will be possible that a person born today in NI will be able to live their entire life without seeing their ‘team’ qualify for a World Cup or Nations Cup tournament .

The first time NI qualified for the World Cup was 1958 and then again in 1982 ? The Republic have qualified 3 times in 1990 , 1994 and 2002 .

The gap in playing standards between the various countries has narrowed . At the time when NI qualified first i.e 1958 the World Cup ‘belonged ‘ to the Brazilians , Germans and Italians .While those countries are still strong contenders it’s now a more open competition . The Republic has improved to the point at which ‘non qualification’ is no longer seen as acceptable witness the furore over last year’s game with France . I guess that NI is more ‘resigned’ to non qualifying or at least so it would seem .

  • FitzjamesHorse

And good luck to Scotland prionsa Eoghan.
But I see no logic in a Scotland or Wales team and no team from Saxony, New South Wales or Texas.

    One team is really enough.
Have to look at the bigger picture. Scots nats should be campaigning for a British team…..which is of course logical.
And as all Scots want a Scotland team…the only way to have one would be independence.

Likewise the Olympics….where that fella with the bike cant hear “Flower of Scotland”.
Dont get me started on Andy Murray. 🙂

  • Driftwood

Actually NI qualified 3 times Greenflag, also in Mexico 1986 when they were unfortunate to lose to Brazil.

Re: 2012-How did Slovenia get put in the 4th pot?

  • Prionsa Eoghann

    >>And good luck to Scotland prionsa Eoghan.< < Thanks Fitzy we need it. >>But I see no logic in a Scotland or Wales team and no team from Saxony, New South Wales or Texas.< < Not sure I am with you here. Saxons are Germans even when Lizzies lot were Monarch's there, those from NSW are Aussies(well sorta) Texans are for the most part Americans. Scots are Scots and the Welsh are Welsh. If all of that is correct then your analogy disnae work. >>Likewise the Olympics….where that fella with the bike cant hear “Flower of Scotland”.
Dont get me started on Andy Murray. :)< < Both been bullied by the England is Britain brigade. No respect for them whatsoever. >>And as all Scots want a Scotland team…the only way to have one would be independence.<< Crackin original idea, mind if I steal it? Book me in for casualty 2mins after I suggest it though at the next meeting of the West of Scotland Tartan army ;¬)
