Guinness cutting back jobs

Gary McDonald, the business editor at the Irish News, reports (subs neededs) a five per cent decline in the profits of Diageo, the company which produces Guinness. There are expected to be a series of job losses in Dublin and Belfast.

.. the companys trading statement coincided with speculation that Guinness plans to virtually halve its brewing and kegging divisions in Dublin and Belfast through a voluntary severance scheme. Around 130 jobs are expected to be lost in the 270-strong department, though the bulk of them will be in Dublin. A formal announcement is expected tomorrow.

Guinness employs 1,200 staff at its St Jamess Gate brewery in Dublin (down from a peak of 4,000 in the mid-1970s) while another 800 people are on the payroll at the Guinness UDV holding company operations at Boucher Road and Marshalls Road in Belfast.
