Friday Thread: What crazy woman would pop her head through a glass ceiling?

Well, probably not in general. Definitely not in politics. And certainly not in Ireland, where in the Republic just 15% of politicians are women. But elsewhere, in the global marketplace this is changing rapidly, as Hanna Rosin points out in her TED talk: …for every two men who get a college degree, three women will do the same. Women, for the first time this year, became the majority of the American workforce. And they’re starting to dominate lots of professions …

Friday Thread: Eradication of extreme poverty and the idea of momentum, inertia and jeopardy…

Bono talks data poverty eradication at TED and, crucially, eradication of corruption. For which he proposes a familar solution: “The biggest disease of all is corruption. There is vaccine for that too. It’s called transparency. Open datasets.” First he may have to convince first world countries. Well worth taking the time to watch it all. But I picked those three words out which he uses to great effect to demonstrate how great potential can be killed by failing to do …

Friday Thread: The lost art of democratic debate…

Great TED lecture from Professor Michael Sandel who argues that in order to rejuvenate an old style inclusive political debate we must enable citizens to bring their own moral convictions to bear on democratic argument… Mick FealtyMick is founding editor of Slugger. When the flashmobs turn into #cashmobs…

If you don’t already read Rory Sutherland you really should start now. His wiki column in the Spectator is expensive, if you are not that interested in the intricacies of the current centre right government, but you can read his blog at Brand Republic for free. In particular, this bit on the still latent potential of the Internet struck me as interesting: …the real promise of collective action will only be realised when there’s money involved as well as time. When flashmobs become …
