Cartoon – The collapse of…

Disregarding the teaching of the Catholic Church, the Irish voted overwhelmingly in favour of equal marriage. Quite the collapse of power.

Catholic Ireland hasn’t existed since the mid 1990s. Stop peddling the myth

  • the rich get richer

Thank God (joke or is it) the Republic of Ireland is no longer run by the catholic church.

It is still strongly culturally influenced by it though.

Liberal laws on abortion would not be passed in Ireland for a long time to come if ever.

Could Gay people from the North get married in the south after the referendum ?

  • Jag

I’d go back to the early 1980s and the acceptance of contraception. You’re right though – contraception, divorce, homosexuality, collapse in Mass attendance, single parenthood, destymatisation of illegitimacy, Fr Ted, the abuse scandals, corporate cover-ups and reports, Enda and Eamon giving the finger to the Vatican, secret children of priests and a bishop and the laiety dominance in Mass services – Ireland is no longer a Catholic country but I would say it is a far more Christian country.

  • Dan

Those that voted, voted in a majority in favour, but the Irish didn’t vote overwhelmingly in favour at all. 35% voted in favour,

  • Jag

True, and 24% voted against, with around 40% not voting at all. You’re surely not saying though that the 40% who didn’t vote were all “no” voters?

  • Dan

    No, not at all.
…..but they weren’t yes, so ‘the Irish voted overwhelmingly in favour’ is overstating the fact really.

  • Ciaran

It’s turned into a sewer of a country.

  • Kevin Breslin

From a clerigical point of authority that collapsed when the church had been dominated by child sex scandals and the Magdeline laundries. A church is more than its clergy though.

    Cartoon response;

They are quare in the way that they are not fair up North

  • Sergiogiorgio

“So there he is. Risen from the dead. Like that fella…errr…ET”.

  • mac tire

This is not difficult at all (for most, anyway). Of those who voted, they voted overwhelmingly in favour of gay marriage. As I’m sure you know, it’s only those who vote who counts.

  • Carl Mark

Dan remember Democracy that is how it works, get with the program!

  • Carl Mark

Tried telling him that, doesn’t seem to understand the way the system works.

  • Carl Mark

Cairan, could you explain that please.

  • Am Ghobsmacht

“church is more than its clergy though.”

As a Texan minister once said after a hurricane took out his church building; “It’s the people, not the steeple”
