ICC Cricket World Cup 2015: Ireland v West Indies

Ireland’s cricketers are opening their account in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 in Nelson, New Zealand, against the West Indies tonight.  There were optimistic noises from the Ireland camp in advance of the game.  And they might not be misplaced.  At time of writing, having won the toss and deciding to field, Ireland have restricted the West Indies to 120 for 5 from 32 overs.  Spinner George Dockrell has already snaffled the key wickets of Chris Gayle and Marlon Samuels.

You can follow the match via the BBC text coverage, also on Radio 5live.  Or use Cricinfo’s excellent text commentary.

Final West Indies 304 for 7 from 50 overs.

A sixth-wicket stand of 154 runs by Simmons and Sammy has made this more difficult than it should have been for Ireland.

It’s a lot higher total than Ireland were hoping for.

Update  Oh ye of little faith…  [Ye!? – Ed]

As I was sleeping, Ireland set about dismantling the West Indies bowling, comfortably overhauling their target to reach 307 for 6 from 45.5 overs.

Ireland win by 4 wickets!

It’s only the fifth successful World Cup chase in excess of 300 runs.  And three of those have been by Ireland.

As former England spinner Graeme Swann said,

“I’d say this is a better victory than the one against England, that was a one-man show from Kevin O’Brien, this was a team effort, five or six people putting their hands up and delivering a world class performance.”

Indeed.

254/6 (46.0 ov) Now flouncing off to bed having lost the post I was working on for the last hour… Grrr…

  • Yeah, it doesn’t look good at this point.
    280 for 6 from 48 overs.
It will need a hell of a knock from Ireland batsmen.

  • mickfealty

over three hundred now with a few balls to go, night over for me, and Ireland I think…

  • West Indies 304 for 7 from 50 overs.

  • mickfealty

Hey, Ireland 307/6 (45.5 ov)… Whodda thunk it?

  • mickfealty

    Coat trailer Mooney!!

[Is that really a term? – Ed] You stay out of this!!

  • Dan

    Good win.
Not that much of a shock anymore though. West Indies players seem to only care about the IPL, and money.

Great weekend for middle class Irish sports fans. Just goes to show, All-Ireland sports teams can compete with the very best in the world……

  • Floreat Ultonia

Some do, some don’t. In rugby, they’re effectively the defending European chamipons: but in football the team (for all its players from NI, England and Scotland) is currently ranked 33rd of 54 UEFA countries by FIFA.

The cricketers deserve all the credit even if Windies are a rabble at the moment.

  • Mirrorballman

Maybe that’s because we have football teams instead of a team. Pooling all of the islands sporting talent as well as those from abroad who wish to represent us clearly provides us with a much greater chance of success on the international stage as shown by the cricket and rugby teams.

  • Floreat Ultonia

I sense a compromise isn’t at the front of your mind, MBM. You’ve already got an all-Ireland team bulked out by British ringers and it’s still mediocre. The NI team isn’t planning to dissolve in aid of your fantasy so maybe try a different strategy?

A few tips: sack your deranged FA chief, divert most of his successor’s salary to grassroots development, and encourage more of your squad to play somewhere other than England, where they’re knackered from club games before the sharp end of international qualifying tournaments. Mr K Lafferty of Turkey, Sicily and Switzerland via Kesh Co. Fermanagh can offer tips?

  • Davros64

    Laugherty more like.
Anyway, nice Hypocrisy;the North’s team has plenty of Eng.& Scots-born players and always will do now since yer more bigoted, paranoid fans alienated around 45% of their potential playing pool…
And nothing to do with where they play;just that the current Irish football team isn’t very good.
Smaller countries, including thiose teams that exist by default like the North, ‘enjoy’ cyclical success…

  • Davros64

Hmm,good that you ignored the UI boxing and golf teams, two of the best in the world!

  • Tochais Siorai

No danger of Kyle getting knackered from club games. Might get a little tired from the odd late night though.

  • Floreat Ultonia

No hypocrisy involved. I’ve no objection to the South’s football team (or any other) fielding as many outsiders as you need, providing you, MBM and others stop gurning about abolishing the NI team.

British and Irish international sides are made up almost entirely of players from club sides in England, who play more games than in almost every other European country, and don’t enjoy a mid-season break unlike other major leagues. Which goes some way to explain why they (or England, at least) are knackered during summer tournaments and so under-perform.

  • Davros64

Well, maybe amnesia then. You clearly forgot that numerous players in both teams have been born outside their ‘home territory’.
No-one mentioned getting rid of the North’s team, though fail to see what the Koreans have to do with anything…

  • Floreat Ultonia

Did you miss my previous post offering no objection to any team fielding as many outsiders as they need- or just not understand it?

MBM isn’t satisfied with the existing all-Ireland and beyond team; that’s why he wants the NI team to dissolve and increase the AI equivalent’s playing pool.

Now stop putting up trolling nonsense, there’s a good chap.

  • Davros64

Except in your opening reply you droned on about Ireland’s use of their Diaspora, so you might need address your own literacy (& hypocrisy) issues, that and your ‘definition’of certain words.
‘Trolling’ does not mean someone who finds your views pompous, continually laden with factual inconsistency or just offensive…

As for MBM,he merely made a suggestion, which your irrational paranoia seems to make this rather difficult to grasp…though it would also mean the end of the current Irish soccer team too!

As for anything anyone else says, you need to actively ‘progress’ H.A.I.R.Issues and generally SAFPUWD…
