Mickey Brady gets Sinn Fein nomination but what now for Murphy?

Tonight comes the news that Newry MLA Mickey Brady has been nominated in place of the sitting MP Conor Murphy.

That’s quite a piece of news for a man who was once widely spoken of as a future leader, and a former Minister of course.

  • Morpheus

Maybe they are bringing him back to Stormont where he can play an active role? It seems Westminster is where elected reps go to pasture…unless of course you are Mr Potatohead and need both salaries

  • mickfealty

Not in Newry and Armagh I don’t think. That would be an odd reverse of the previous decision, and besides there are other names being talked about for taking over Mickey’s seat.

  • NMS

Maybe they are afraid that someone might break ranks about the Quinn murder? Mr. Murphy was never very clear about it. Getting the brother to break up a meeting about it, suggests weakness. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vLzQKtDJQ_U

Perhaps Conor did not put his name forward. After all, it must be quite unchallenging and unrewarding being an MP for an abstentionist party – does he even draw a salary or pension? I was surprised Michelle put her name forward for FST.

I love it when SF get people guessing, drives the media nuts that they cant get an inside mole to give them a scoop

  • Sam Maguire

I’d have thought the logic was fairly obvious – it’s the second seat in Louth or Cavan/Monaghan

  • NMS

Sam, wonderful. Hopefully one of Paul Quinn’s family will stand against him, if he dares to stand in either constituency. I think Mr. Murphy is being retired before his past catches up with him

  • Comrade Stalin

That was seven [fixed – thanks Nevin] years ago. The Quinn family are incredibly brave and have put up with a lot on top of their grief, but I don’t think they plan to challenge SF electorally.

  • Comrade Stalin

Kremlinology is I believe the term you are looking for

  • Nevin

Comrade, Suzanne Breen has just written an article on the seventh anniversary of the callous murder of Paul Quinn.

  • Robin Keogh

    No the term is responsibility

  • Comrade Stalin

not sure what responsibility has to do with it

SF carefully control their membership and their narrative, as did the old CPSU.

  • Robin Keogh

I understand where u are coming from and i see why u are confused. In a world where billionaire media bosses control our pokitical elite its easy to mistake a party who refuses the join that particular club as one that you describe. Of course the truth is that they are simply a united party who refuse to allow vested interests control their policy agenda.

  • Comrade Stalin

Appreciate the correction Nevin, thank you. Suzanne’s article is excellent as always.

  • Comrade Stalin

Sinn Féin is the richest political party on the island of Ireland and its party leader is easily the most wealthy.

SF Dont hide their income figures. I Assume u have stats on GA wealth?

  • Yeah, Gerry’s not part of that particular club.

On this visit I also took the opportunity to meet with many friends of Ireland and others to discuss the political process here. Some of these included President Clinton, Congressman Richie Neale and Tony Blair…

    No, sirree…

Thanks for that, i think its great that GA attends and is involved in initiatives that create thousands of jobs and helps development in the global south. Although what it has to do with SF not dancing to the tune of media moguls is beyond me, but thanks for the interedting link anyway…….makes me more proud of GA

  • Robin Keogh

Maybe if susan were to name the people who carried out the killing, it might help the authorities?

See above reply, i typed in the wrong box ;(

And Kathryn Reilly? Louth, maybe though.

It has been widely reported that GA meets with Kris Balderston of Fleishman Hilliard whilst in Washington DC. For those who do not move in these circles, Kris has worked for Hilary Clinton and Fleishman Hilliard are part of Omnicom corp an advertising and PR conglomerate with world wide reach and revenue in the billions.

Maybe Gerry was trying to sell him Che posters

“But some of us can do it for them – shame on our politicians for their wilful abandonment of the family of Paul Quinn.” .. Suzanne

I found this February 19, 2008 Alliance Party PR:

Alliance Leader David Ford and Justice Spokesperson Stephen Farry are today meeting the family of Paul Quinn and will be hammering home the need for justice in the floor of the Assembly today as it debates his murder.

David Ford said: “This was a heinous murder. The family of Paul Quinn have suffered unmeasurable pain over the last four months.

“Today we will be bringing the concerns of the family to the floor of the Assembly.

“Many massive questions on this horrific murder remain unanswered. Sinn Fein and the DUP, in their cosy partnership, have sought to deflect the spotlight from questions over IRA involvement. This is sickening and the truth must out.

“Justice must be done. That at least would be some little comfort to Paul’s family.”

David became Minister of Justice in April 2010. Perhaps a party member can comment on any involvement in this tragic case since he became minister.
