The Lions Test Team – how were our predictions?

Here’s the team:

Leigh Halfpenny (Wales),Alex Cuthbert (Wales),  Brian O’Driscoll (Ireland)  Jonathan Davies (Wales), George North (Wales), Jonathan Sexton (Ireland), Mike Phillips (Wales); Alex Corbisiero (England), Tom Youngs (England), Adam Jones (Wales), Alun Wyn Jones (Wales), Paul O’Connell (Ireland), Tom Croft (England), Sam Warburton (Wales, capt), Jamie Heaslip (Ireland).

Subs: Richard Hibbard (Wales), Mako Vunipola (England), Dan Cole (England), Geoff Parling (England), Dan Lydiate (Wales), Ben Youngs (England), Owen Farrell (England), Sean Maitland (Scotland).

Astonished at Maitland as sub, very strange. No Faletau on bench either.

As for our original predictions….:

I get 9.

Newman gets 9.

Boondock gets 8.

and Mark gets 9.

Pretty consistently mediocre all of us…….I blame the injuries….

The bench looks a bit weak to be honest, lets hope we are well up at 60mins and not in need of any impact subs. I might be bias but I thought Zebo showed more in his brief time than Maitland has all tour also I am no fan of Murray but Ben Youngs was simply atrocious in the last match. Faletau, Tipuric and O’Brien are also unlucky not to make the bench

Gatland has been true to his word and picked the form players for the first test . I don’t think many punters would have chosen Heaslip over Faletau before the tour started . Heaslips’ form over the last couple of weeks ( esp last saturday ) has cemented his place in the team . O Briens’ absence from the bench is a surprise however he could be carrying an injury that we don’t know about .

It would have been very interesting if Jamie Roberts had been fit as I don’t think O Driscoll would have got the nod . Jon Davies’ form on the tour has made him undroppable and I think Gatland would have gone with the Welsh pair as his starting centres regardless of O Driscolls’ fitness . The fact the Lions have players in the backs who can interchange their positions could be crucial and the edge needed to win the series .

Don’t be surprised if Halfpenny is given extra special treatment from the Aussie back row as I’m sure they realise his potential as the match winner ……..and the player of the series .
