Billabong XXL 2012 Big Wave Awards

Here are some scary fun videos…  As the Irish Times reports, two of the five nominations for the Billabong XXL 2012 Biggest Wave award were surfed at Mullaghmore Head, County Sligo, on March 8th.  The category carries a $15,000 prize.  Here are the nominees.

As the Irish Times adds

The other nominees in the category are Garrett McNamara’s huge wave at Priaia do Norte, Nazaré, Portugal last November, Basque surfer Axi Muniain’s ride at Agiti, Spain in November and Damien “Taco” Warr’s beast at Cow Bombie, Western Australia in October.

McNamara is also included in the nominees for the main ride of the year award, which carries at $50,000 prize, along with Californian Nathan Fletcher for his insane death-defying barrel at Teahupoo in Tahiti and fellow Californian Greg Long for a huge paddle-in tube at Puerto Escondido, Mexico. The final two nominees are Australian Ryan Hipwood for his tube at massive Cloudbreak in Tavarau, Fiji and Jeff Rowley for his paddle-in wave at Jaws on Maui in Hawaii, which was previously seen as a tow-surfing spot only.

Pete, the Mullaghmore head I know is in Sligo, (of Mounbatten murder infamy) the only Mullaghmore in Clare I could find was a small mountain.

They look awsome waves btw, good to get the message out Irelands West & North coasts have great surf, and the water isn’t that cold, honest!

Yeah, DR, I’ve amended the text appropriately. Couldn’t tell from the report so I had a stab rather than checking…

Its a beautiful little place, havn’t been for years though, maybe a visit is required.

It is a naturally beautiful place completley ruined by all the caravans everywhere

Tried this in Bali, came out sore, Dazed and with a lot of respect for the waves and the people who surf them.
Trust me it’s a lot harder than they make it look.
