Front-runner bows out before race to Áras begins

Front-runner in the most recent poll of potential candidates for Irish President, Gay Byrne, has told RTÉ News that he will not be entering the race.  From the RTÉ report

Describing it as a ‘worthy objective’, he sent best wishes to all the other candidates in the race and anyone else who may enter it.

Mr Byrne said there was no particular reason why he had decided not to run.

He said the option of running was foisted on him and he had not known anything about it and what it would involve.

He said he therefore had to take advice from a number of people before making a decision.

Time for Norris to be conscripted again. He has been charged with effectively the same crime twice and not been found guilty. Nobody is without blemish if you search back over everything said and done in the last forty years.

I think Charlie Mountbatten-Windsor should apply for the job as a bit of training, or at least a consolation prize if he is passed over someday, come to think of it comparing him to the names in play or fallen by the wayside, he would make an exceptionally good Head of State, I hope the British Republicans are following this farce unfold.

  • Would I be correct to assume that this is filed under the humour category like the bog person?

  • Irish Times reports unease amongst FF rank-and-file over potential party nomination of Gay Byrne:

“The broadcaster has decided not to put his name forward amidst growning unease among Fianna Fail TDs and senators about having him as a party-backed presidential candidate.

Some party members had expressed concern yesterday that the leadership was preparing to parachute him into the race over party loyalists.”
