Duffy – a promising Nefyn folk singer…

Here we go:

Duffy singing “Ar lan y môr” from the soundtrack of new Welsh film “Patagonia”. (Coming to the flix soon…)
Not bad but Cerys is better – the Bob Dylan treatment…..Cool…
Katherine is, like all Clannad…
But I still reckon Mine’s the best…
Not really – Siân knows how it goes..
For those interested it’s great that everyone sings different words!

My vote would go to Cerys’s version — though I have a soft spot for the one by Elin Fflur (also on Youtube). As for Dewi — I think you need a few backing musicians to be in the same league …
Somehow I don’t think Patagonia will ever make it to our local cinema in Coleraine, or even QFT. I hear it got well received when it was shown in Chapter (Cardiff’s best cinema), though

Good stuff Dewi but what does ‘Ar lan y mor ‘ translate as literally ? I’ve seen several translations one being ‘on the seashore there are red roses ‘ which does’nt seem right ? or maybe it is ?

‘An leanbh mor ‘ in Irish translates as ‘the big baby ‘ .The perils of comparative linguistics eh ?

Good to see Welsh traditional and folk tunes being resurrected . Most of us only ever hear as Welsh the national anthem -and Men of Harlech etc and yet Welsh Choral singers are the world’s best ? A mystery wrapped in an enigma ?

Carnegie Hall is a mere 10,000 hours of practice away 🙂
The 10,000 hours theme is from Gladwell’s ‘tipping point’ theory iirc . It’s the point at which talent crosses over into ‘stardom ‘ if one is driven enough . Well done -I’ll assume the comments in Welsh were positive mostly.

Translation from Wiki: (Depends a bit on which part of Wales u r from…)
Beside the sea red roses growing
Beside the sea white lilies showing
Beside the sea their beauty telling
My true love sleeps within her dwelling

Beside the sea the stones lie scattered
Where tender words in love were uttered
While all around there grew the lily
    And sweetest branches of rosemary

Beside the sea blue pebbles lying
Beside the sea gold flowers glowing
Beside the sea are all things fairest
Beside the sea is found my dearest

Full the sea of sand and billows
Full the egg of whites and yellows
Full the woods of leaf and flower
Full my heart of love for ever.

Fair the sun at new day’s dawning
    Fair the rainbow’s colours shining
Fair the summer, fair as heaven
Fairer yet the face of Elin

and only men aloud’s version is pretentious bull…

But absolutely best of all – the native Australian version
    Wonderful!

I knew I should’nt have asked. Welsh must be a very compressed and compact language ;)?

How can 4 words in Welsh translate into 5 verses and 20 lines of English ? Is this payback for that tongue twister
    Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch, ?

    Didgeridoos what next ?;)

    The bit i love:
    Llawn yw’r wy o wyn a melyn
    Llawn yw’r coed o ddail a blodau

The egg is full of white and yellow
The forest’s full of leaves and flowers

    that’s pretty cool.

Is Duffy that nice girl on the bycicle in that advertisement? (I’m serious here guys and girls)! To me, she has a lovely voice. (and I know that advert was a few years back).

  • Dewi

Yes Mr Prefect – she is also courting Mike Phillips, the Wales No 9. A National debate:

    Is:
    a) Duffy responsible for Mike’s dip in form?
    b) Is Mike responsible for Duffy’s recent dismal record sales or
    c) both?
