‘look we tried it and it did not work and it’s not going work this time either’

The Guardian report of comments by the de facto leader of the ‘good’ UDA, Jackie McDonald, contains a significant line.  From the report

The UDA leader also expressed some sympathy for mainstream republicans in Sinn Féin in terms of facing up to the dissident threat. He pledged that the UDA would continue to work with Sinn Féin on sectarian flashpoints to defuse communal tensions in the 2011 loyalist marching season. “I know that it’s a Catch 22 for republicans. It’s hard for them to police the dissidents. They can’t be big brother to the dissidents. But the mainstream republicans do need to keep saying to the dissidents that ‘look we tried it and it did not work and it’s not going work this time either’.

Significant, as we begin to see evidence of a return of the militants, because that’s not what they have been saying.

Is it?

Sinn Fein says it “supports” the Good Friday Agreement. The record says different.

It declined to sign the document, or campaign for a referendum “Yes” vote. It then claimed ministerial posts in government, while retaining an illegal military wing and refusing to support the police. The “not a bullet, not an ounce” procrastination, against the expressed will of the Irish people, led to several Stormont suspensions, before double agent Denis Donaldson’s spying escapades finally collapsed it. “Well done David Trimble.” Later, SF secretly agreed to alter key provisions of the agreement and to restrict North/South bodies, all to suit the DUP. Then the Northern Bank heist put the GFA on a life support machine.

The record also shows Sinn Fein with two consistent aims: One a lust for power: The other making N.I. ungovernable. However, the primary lust for power tempted SF into supporting the PSNI (with intelligence gathering going to MI5) as the price for getting into bed with the DUP.

As for one more wee concession now, to the UDA – such as publically saying to the dissidents; ‘look we tried it and it did not work and it’s not going work this time either’- might not happen? But for an electoral carrot anything might be said or done. So hold the presses for yet another “hugely significant, seismic, historic, courageous, momentous and unprecedented decision” – as every SF somersault, from the IRA’s “permanent” ceasefire, is routinely described.

‘look we tried it and it did not work and it’s not going work this time either’.

How very helpful. All Sinn Fein are short of, advice from the UDA…

“All Sinn Fein are short of, advice from the UDA…”

    Problem with comprehension, pip?

Look again at the full quote.

But the mainstream republicans do need to keep saying to the dissidents that ‘look we tried it and it did not work and it’s not going work this time either’.
