BBC Cameras outside DUP Headquarters in Belfast…

Stand by for more information… Update: No confirmation, stand down expectations… BTW, I’m on the BBC Radio 4 PM programme shortly…

  • Lionel Hutz

How much more drama can you have in a week.

  • Mick Fealty

I hope this is the final play… I’m supposed to be taking the kids to a theatre show in an hour… bang goes those plans…

  • LukeCass

Unlucky Mick! But this is likely to be the line that the DUP have sacked Iris and Peter has 1 week, right?

  • The Raven

Lionel, in one week I’ve run out of the entire gamut of Shakespearean comparisons!

  • Gael gan Náire

I have to admire your dedication Mick, but take the kids to the theatre!

My friends in the MSM assure me that we are only at the half way mark in this saga.

  • Mick Fealty

Luke, you’ve not been reading Slugger today as closely as you should… We’ve had that line… that’s not what I’m expecting…

With an iterative version of the Spotlight being rebadged as Panorama on Monday night, there is only one way to stem further damage…

  • Mick Fealty

Really Gael? You might right. But I can’t afford to take the risk.

  • granni trixie

Mick:you’re the lucky one – today is my usual day for doing the washing, cleaning etc but Irisgate has put me off my stride and I’ve given up.

Menwhile, you’ll have a glow from having done your duty and you may even enjoy the theatre when you return God knows what twist or turn the story will have taken!

  • LukeCass

” Luke, you’ve not been reading Slugger today as closely as you should ”

It would appear so Mick! And so it continues…..

  • Rory Carr

I’m standing by sitting down but I am on the edge of my seat. Is that all right?

You’re a Spartan, Mick (I shied away from saying ‘Trojan’ because of its unfortunate association with a brand of prophylactic which might be misconstrued in this highly sexually charged atmosphere).

  • The Raven

  • The Raven

    oops…sorry folks…that was a statement, not a link. 🙁

  • Hogan

Resigning on a Saturday… these DUP boyos have nothing to learn about media management. Nice!

Good effort at reducing the cynicism as to how they’ve handled this whole affair too!

  • Nordie Northsider

The DUP press conference might be more entertaining than the theatre, but maybe not for youngsters. It has a strong element of panto: ‘Look out, Peter – she’s behind you!’

  • Jaggers

Well other than a pronouncement on Peter Robinson’s future, the selection of a replacement, the replacement’s dealings with SF and P&J, the effect on the DUP’s performance in the forthcoming Gen Election what more is there with this story?

However just seen the opening headlines on BBC News at 4pm and there’s no mention of a news conference or “cut to live”. The statement is probably a consolidation of the last 24 hours ie “independent” “examination” of the financial propriety/propriety in public office question, dismissal of Iris from the party, sympathy for Peter.

Separately a Facebook Group is throwing up some interesting rumour on matters of cupidity and peculation.

  • Mick Fealty

Yes, well… I can guess… But no one should put anything up here that they can stand over… Remember, keep your eye on the ball…

  • smcgiff

Unlike previous pronouncements it looks like a week in politics may be very short indeed.

  • Mick Fealty

On second thoughts… this could just be a piece to camera for the Politics Show… or, as Luke say, TV announcement of Iris’s resignation…

Calming myself down… and taking a deep breath…

  • Comrade Stalin
  • Greenflag

More theatre ahead . The DUP are going to have to dump their leader sooner than they’d like . They can’t go into an election with all this debacle blaring at them from all sides . S.O.S time.

  • willis

Maybe if Iris and Peter had spent more time in the theatre and less in church the outcome would have been very different.

  • Jaggers

BBC News have just played a pre-recorded interview with Shaun Woodward – I think that’s it for Irisgate in this hour’s news cycle. Maybe better to see a traditional Pantomine, Mick.

The Woodward interview wasn’t time stamped but was described as taking place “a little earlier” but looks like before the DUP announcement recorded by the Belfast Telegraph regarding Iris Robinson. Woodward says he believes Peter Robinson should be given the time and opportunity to defend himself against allegations arising from the recent revelations.

It’s a fast-moving story but it looks like Peter Robinson will continue in post for the weekend at least, though plainly there is a lot of discussion across all ranks of the DUP.

  • LukeCass

    Tuning into radio 4 !

  • Jaggers

The BBC World Service radio has just stated that “senior figures within the DUP have described his [Peter Robinson’s] position as untenable” – Mick, I can stand over that.

  • Lionel Hutz

    So what happened then

  • Issac Ball

What are the rules regarding donations/gifts etc ?
Peter has said he immediately asked his wife to arrange repayment of the money through a solicitor and thought it had been done.
    He ‘Thought’!!
Now surely the bold Peter, so intelligent and righteous, the brilliant party strategist and fixer should have got written confirmation from these solicitor(s) and perhaps even the developers also.
They were his ‘friends’ too after all ?
Now this is just after learning that the ‘wife’ of 40 years has dogged him, he ‘ thought ‘ he could trust her – again ! Cynical am I ?
The game’s up for the unionists in the province. With less money floating about in GB to buy them off, the Brits are now getting their own kickback. Too-good-to-true loyal ulster unionists corrupt to the core, bringing the shame onto themseles.
Big Ian & Son first and now the right-hand man, who would have believed it ?
With a reduced budget from GB coming up we will all have to hammer out a deal on the basic economics of running a wee six county council.
But, we have the Real Men now getting lucky all of a sudden or is it a case of their paymasters needing a little aggro to bring the war back up to full speed to keep the big wages coming in ?
    Now there’s a ‘Thought’.

  • alan56

We seem to be be in awe of and led by the BBC in all of this..
    ‘bbc cameras outside DUP HQ’…
What are the normal appearance fees these days? !!

  • LabourNIman

lol and I thought my party had problems going into the election.

  • pinni

It’s good to see that everyone thinks that everything the Robinsons and the DUP are far more important that any other political party in NI. I can’t recall such hysteria.

  • Mick Fealty

I’m pretty sure we’ll have plenty of time for the others soon enough… Whether it is to be parties or individuals, is not yet clear…

Tories and the UUs will be announcing their candidate lists next week and I am hoping we’ll bring you some decent coverage of the SDLP leadership election in the Slieve Donard…

  • Mick Fealty

Plus, pinni, this is about transparency and accountability. If we don’t start putting that straight then we won’t have a political life that much higher above the street gangsterism of the 70s and 80s…

  • “If we don’t start putting that straight then we won’t have a political life that much higher above the street gangsterism of the 70s and 80s”

Whatever else may have caused the murder campaign/troubles they were hardly sparked by a shortage of “transparency and accountability”.

A drop of self-serving rhetoric there?

  • Comrade Stalin

Tories and the UUs will be announcing their candidate lists next week

I doubt that comedy sideshow is going to distract people from the intrigue at the heart of the DUP.
