Irish News: McGlone – ‘McDonnell gaining support for leader

In today’s Irish News (p25) recently SDLP Deputy Leader (elect) Patsy McGlone said he had seen an upswing in support during his consultation of party faithful for South Belfast MP Alasdair McDonnell.

McGlone may not pride himself on exhaustive John Quincy Adams impressions on the floor of the Assembly but there is no doubt that like McDonnell when it comes to reading the nuances of party members he is quite adept.

Whether or not any recent shift is as a result of the ill-advised decision to nominate Social Development Minister Margaret Ritchie as the party’s selection for the Justice Ministry….its best for others to speculate…

I think it is still too close to call,I dont think there will be much more than 10-20 votes in it-either way.

  • Mick Fealty

There have been some calculations that Ritchie had way more of the branches behind her… That would suggest that some of those branches no longer have many votes left in them… or, as Brian Feeney has suggested that McDonnell’s people have been recruiting like mad…

    Delegates are based on membership
    11-20 members 2 delegates
    21-30 members 3 delegates
and so a branch with 91 members would have 5 times more delegates than one with 20.
Elected members and executive members are ex-officio delegates.
