He’s a thug, he’s somebody who uses violence….

Mohammed Shafiq, from the Ramadhan Foundation writes on his blog

I am deeply shocked and saddened at Prince Harry’s racism which upsets and offends many British Asians. The use of this sort of racism has no justification and I am saddened by those that are advocating using this term is not racist.

On BBC 5 Live Mohammed condemns Prince Harry without reservation.
He says: He’s a thug. He’s somebody who uses violence and he is somebody who is trying to promote racism.

A thug? Lets hope Harry isn’t easily offended….

I posted this on an earlier thread about Harrys racist remark but it seems more appropriate to have it here.

I have listened to several local broadcasters stating that people from here get called Paddy when they go to england, but its a bit softer than a Pakinstani being refered to as a Paki.

Some broadcasters have even questioned if the term Paki is racist as if said in a non antogonistic manner it’s just an abbreviated form of the title Pakistani.

So if this is the case then it would be quite acceptable then to refer to someone from Nigeria as Nigger if it’s said in a polite manner. No it would not.Lets be honest about it and stop the it’s not racist but Nonsense.

The Prince should never have agreed to this interview. It’s his own fault this is being revealed.

My main point for this thread, is that it’s not ok to call someone a thug and then say you are offended by their remarks. It’s somewhat different to the earlier thread because of that.

  • Driftwood

Imagine the outrage if he had referred to his fellow squaddies by the perjorative term ‘Brits’.

  • cut the bull

Is it not thugish behaviour to refer to some one in a racist term.
Is racist taunting not a form of violence.
Mohammed was spot on and people should be prepared to tell it as it is and stop wrapping racism and Harrys racist remarks in cotton wool

  • Kathleen

Cut the bull, doesn’t it apply the other way around?. If calling names is bullying behaviour then Mohammed is just as guilty. Pot and kettle. If Mohammed wants people to be careful incase they give offence, the same rules should apply to him.

  • NP

Sure what the hell …. takes after his granda Phil. Apparently alot of Eton types who have curley hair get nicknamed “WOG” is that racist… they dont think so..

  • cut the bull

I would be hard pushed to agree with you as I believe his racist language was thugish behaviour.Although maybe it may have played better to the press had Mohammed described used the term to described Harrys manner and behaviour as opposed to harry himself.
In saying that I think racism is the lowest refuge of a thug.

  • Kathleen

Cut the bull on Nolan this morning Mohammed said he didn’t call Harry a thug, but compared him to one. When later in the show, they read his words back to him, he put his hands up to it. Calling someone a thug is no way to counter racism or bullying. If Mohammed wants no offence he shouldn’t give it.

‘Paki’ comes from the Urdu word for ‘pure’.
Pakistan = Land of the pure

Given the massive bloodletting that accompanied the partition of India and then the independence of Bangladesh ‘Paki’ could never be an acceptable generic term for south Asians.

But might a Pakistani Muslim sometimes be proud of being called ‘pure’? Depending on the context of course. Discuss.

  • picador

Here is an example of what I mean:

    http://www.paki.com

I think initially (after 1947) Pakistanis were probably proud to be Pakis while Indian Hindus & Sikhs would have used the term with derision and possibly applied it to the Muslims still living within India. Bangladeshis would have found the term offensive after 1971. It is completely offensive as a generic term for south Asians.

  • cut the bull

Its a hard point to sell if you push this point to its conclusion. It may go something like this, “Now Mr pointy head why are you calling me a N*****r dont you know acting like an ill mannered man (a thug). Now leave me alone and take your burning cross out of my garden”.

  • Kathleen

No cut the bull, it doesn’t have to go that way at all. It could go this way..

I’m a spokesperson for my community, and issues relating to them, I want my community treated with respect, as they should be. Therefore in turn I must treat all other communities with respect.

Mohammed needs to be cleaner than clean, and calling a member of the British royal family a thug will be interpeted by some as offensive.

If you don’t want offence, don’t give it.

  • Driftwood

Which of the following is offensive?
Jock, Taff, Paddy, Paki, Scouser, Geordie, Hun, eyetie, Spic, polack, Pommie, dago, Frog, chink, Ivan, limey, Yank, Hun, fenian, prod, Jaffa, redneck, frankie, culchie, etc etc.
No doubt there are many more.
    Get a life.
Prince Harry lives a priveleged life, but in the spotlight. I’d love to know how many of his detractors have never used any of the above terms.
    Non story.

  • cut the bull

    Kathleen I’ll agree to disagree.

  • AJJM

It is quite ironic that this chap, who defends both Hizb-ut-Tahrir and the extremist cleric Yusuf Al-Qaradawi, and fails to criticise Hamas should refer to Harry as a racist and a thug…

He was also forced to resign as vice-chairman of Rochdale Liberal Democrats last year after he accused the Bishop of Rochester, Michael Nazir-Ali, “of spreading hatred towards muslims”.

  • Ri Na Deise

It doesnt matter what the term means in its original language when it’s used in a knowingly racist context. He hardly was referring to the lad as ‘pure’. Likewise I’m fairly sure anyone using the term ‘taig’ is not referring to their targets poetry skills. It’s racism plain and simple and trying to make out otherwise just makes you look warped and silly.

Pmsl @ the ad in this topic. GAY THUG DATING? Does what it says on the tin? 😀

  • Dan Breen’s Revolver

He’s no different than most kids his age and in the army.

The bigger question I have is, Why does England still have a royal family? They are often an embarassment, a drain on taxpayers, and are simply ancestors of monarchs who stood for British domination no matter what cost to other races and countries.

Offence was neither intended nor taken by the respective parties.
