Inspiration from a by-election?

The artistic mind is often odd but it seems that the Enniskillen by-election has ‘inspired’ one of them. Debbie Coyle and Arlene Foster have been given the role of muse rather than battleship. The drawing was used to illustrate a SF campaign letter that says:

Canvas returns over the past week are telling us that this election contest is neck and neck. A “two horse race”.

  • DC

A two horse race maybe but definitely there’s only one two-face.

Don’t take it to heart now…

  • Dewi

THe best by-election blog so far (apologies Turgon…). What’s the flag on the left?

    It’s a papal flag Dewi

Inappropriate therefore UMH – could be the deciding factor…anyway has anyone persuaded Fermanagh Council to count tomorrow night?

  • jeff

I presume its a Fermanagh flag

It’s a tricolour with the orange part removed, just to annoy the Prods. Despicable behaviour before the election.

  • Dewi

LOL Jeff – if u want to do something properly you have to do it yourself…

    County Flags

  • Ulsters my homeland

It’s well seen an Irishman designed that flag system, Limerick and Fermanagh have the same flags. Stupid Paddy!

  • Dewi

Kildare? All white ? What’s that all about?? Can’t be right…and no dragons on any of them…
Anyway my money’s on Sinn Féin.

A SF election poster that depicts the Union flag: Isn’t this progress?

  • Shore Road Resident

Isn’t there a saying about a flag and a donkey that applies here?
Sinn Fein’s turd really loses its non-sectarian polish out in the sticks. On the plus side, [edited by moderator – play the ball]

Whilst I was playing the man it was with direct reference to crude (and wildly hypocritical given his contribution to this thread) racial stereotyping by UMH (post no10). Perhaps you should review a site policy that permits racism but disallows the racist being called a cretin.

  • Tochais Siorai

Not too many posters around Enniskillen. Will the turnout go above 40% despite the interest on Slugger?

btw I’m confused – is umh annoyed or disappointed that the full tricolour is not displayed?

  • Its about time the Alliance Party got a flag.

Cud i suggest the EU flag but coloured yella?

  • Shore Road Resident

    Dec,
How can one white man really be racist to another?
Isn’t it racist of you to define your nationality as a race?
Also, isn’t trying to don the mantle of anti-racism in a non-racial argument a denigration of those actually suffering racism?

  • Ulsters my homeland

    Chill out Dec,

…An Irishman goes into a shop and buys a chainsaw. Two weeks later he returns the chainsaw and says to the shop assistant: “2 weeks ago I bought this chainsaw and you said that it would chop down 50 trees in an hour. I can only manage 2 trees.”

The shop assistant says, “let me see”, and starts the machine up. BRRRRRR!!!

The Irishman jumps back in surprise and says “what’s that noise?!?”

  • RepublicanStones

    Denial is a terrible thing.

  • Rory

The only possible way that this story can be deemed credible is if UMH was the Irishman who bought the saw. Now that I could well believe.

  • Ulsters my homeland

One day an Englishman, a Scotsman, and [edited by modertaor – play the ball] the Irishman, walked into a pub together. They proceeded to each buy a pint of Guinness. Just as they were about to enjoy their creamy beverage, three flies landed in their pints, one in each.

The Englishman pushed his beer away from him in disgust.

The Scotsman fished the offending fly out of his beer and continued drinking it as if nothing had happened.

[edited by moderator] the Irishman, picked the fly out of his drink, held it out over the beer and then started yelling, “SPIT IT OUT! SPIT IT OUT YOU THIEVING BASTARD!!!”

Three very good questions. Here are my answers:

    1) When it’s a Papal flag
    2) Not if it’s a tricolour with the orange bit removed to offend us’uns
    3)See answer 1

Now, I’ve a question for you:

What is a reasonable length of time for child-killers to be sheltered on the Shore Road?

  • Rory

Anyway I do like the imagery – as the Republican horse strides to the lead, flag upraised, the Unionist horse flags and the Union flag droops in defeat.

  • RepublicanStones

Anyone else notice the virtual tumbleweeds? Slugger needs a bit of weeding methinks !

  • Shore Road Resident

Dec, your answers make no sense at all and your question (to which my answer is “not for one minute”) is tragic whataboutery.

Are you now claiming, via your “papal flag” answer, that your religious grouping is a racial grouping? Absurd.

  • Robert Langdon

    http://www.traditio.com/comment/com0312o.jpg

That clearly is not the papl flag and obviously there is a conspiracy by Opus Dei, the Bilderberg group, the Priory of Sion, and the reverse vampires for it to be seen as such.

now we must ask Qui bono?

The significance of the keyword is rather puzzling.

Nonsensical questions deserve nonsensical answers. Try not to over analyze them. If you don’t think lazy stereotyping and anti-Irish remarks qualify as racism then that’s your lookout. However, don’t expect me to take any subsequent remarks too seriously.

  • Dewi

Forget the flag stuff – (regret starting it) – what’s the weather like on the ground? Is it fever pitch in Fermanagh?

  • Shore Road Resident

Lazy stereotyping and anti-Irish remarks do not qualify as racism. They merely qualify as lazy stereotyping and anti-Irish remarks.

The idea that any European nationality constitutes a race, however, has clearly racist overtones.

This is a very strange thread.

Frank, we need more jokes, the mopery brigade have no sense of humour.

  • The brit horse only has two and a half legs –

either as a result of IRA horse play or it is a deliberate attempt to fix the race…

To sadle either community with such imagery is hoof hearted and whoever came up with this needs reined in – but sure its horses for…..

  • Dewi

Only 23 votes between the last, (4th out of 7) elected nationalist councillor and the unsuccessful UUP candidate in 2005. Could be extremely tight. Semms so daft to have by-elections in multi member PR DEAs – very unfair on the incumbent party if in a minority position in the ward. There’s been a whole series of such elections in Scotland – one of which in South Lanarkshire, on the death of a nationalist councillor, resulted in a Labour gain and a ward with three Labour councillors.
I reckon you should formalise co-option (although the re-org stuff which is so hard to read suggests single member wards – which changes the game again)

Can’t resist but letter in Irish Times:

Madam – The Government is considering making funds available to would be house purchasers who have difficulty getting a mortgage from the regular lending institutions.
No doubt it will market this brilliant proposal under its real name, viz, a sub-prime mortgage. –

    Dublin

    Brilliant!

    Anything else from Fermanagh?

  • Dewi

    A bit serious:
Given the intensity of your politics where do you keep the ballot boxes overnight? Surely it would be better for all to count tonight? – Someone suggest that – it’s totally daft to count tomorrow.

  • slug

Dewi, word has it that nationalist turnout was good. But we will have to wait for the vote tomorrow. We should know by tea time-4pm.

  • Dewi

We went through this in Dromore Slug – but where’s the Tallys? They must count for turnout on the night? Astounding if not in Ireland – I can’t imagine any party trusting anyone to look after the boxes.

  • DK

Shame for whoever wins as the council is about to be abolished
