Dedication service

The new national Armed Forces Memorial will be dedicated today by the Queen. The structure by Liam O’Connor is designed so that the sun will shine on a bronze wreath on the 11th hour of the 11th November. Local stonemasonry company S McConnell and Sons were involved in the project and have expressed their pride in being involved. Aerial footage of the monument here (realplayer or windows media reqd)

    very nice,

now we need a similar monument to their victims all over the world.

let’s start with Iraq and work backwards to 1945

That is one impressive monument. I’m glad they put the names on it.

Don’t be so bitter, Heck. If you need to vent, do it towards the politicians, not the young men and women who believed they were doing their duty.

    Come on Joecanuck

The idea of putting all the names on a monument is an attempt to copy the US Vietnam memorial in Washington.

This is an attempt to justify imperialism. Look at this nonsense from conservative blogger Andrew Sullivan

    http://andrewsullivan.theatlantic.com/the_daily_dish/2007/10/face-of-the-d-7.html

The Argentineans defending their country were “terrorists” not “young men and women who believed they were doing their duty”. The hundreds of thousands or Iraqi soldiers killed in the first gulf war were “terrorists” not “young men and women who believed they were doing their duty”. IRA volunteers were “terrorists” not “young men and women who believed they were doing their duty”. (that one is to provoke a response)

I am reminded of the Cormac cartoon were he described British history as the British army going to other countries and oppressing the locals and then the locals fighting back. To those indoctrinated by the British elite the first is called peace keeping and the second is called terrorism.

As to Andrew Sullivan’s nonsense, maybe the monument should include the names of those killed by that “terrorist” George Washington.

    Come on Heck.

    An attempt to justify imperialism?

heck: IRA volunteers were “terrorists” not “young men and women who believed they were doing their duty”. (that one is to provoke a response)
Phew. Until then I thought you were being sarcastic.
Other than that, the only person responsible for Andrew Sullivan’s remarks is – Andrew Sullivan.
