The red hand tax?

Green MLA, Brian Wilson, has called for the new Assembly to seek tax-raising powers equivalent to the Scottish parliament as part of reforming the local rates system. He argues the present rates system particuarly harms single person householders. Full motion here. The other three motions concentrate on health, Alliance want a cost benefit analysis of free perscriptions while Sinn Fein raise mental health provision for children and adolescents and the treatment of children in state care.

  • Alliance want a cost benefit analysis of free perscriptions

    Enormous benefits, enormous costs.

Sinn Fein raise mental health provision for children and adolescents

A huge problem and universally recognised as such for years, but recruiting, training and retaining people to work in the field is not so easy.

and the treatment of children in state care

Again a universally recognised problem (and one with little mileage in tackling, so credit to the Shinners for raising the subject). However, a lot of the political pressure here comes from groups which themselves have removed themselves from actually delivering services, and instead lobby politicians and moan at social workers, because it’s easier.
