Disturbing reminder of ‘darker’ side of the Web

The rioting in West Belfast earlier this week was accompanied with revelations by local community workers that some of the young people involved had been using the internet to bridge the sectarian divide for all the wrong reasons-i.e. to arrange fights.
It’s been flagged up before in the media, but it would appear that young people are continuing to use the internet to gloat about sectarian violence and killings here as well. This disturbing video was posted on Youtube by a youngster identifying himself to be a 16 year old boy.

  • SuperSoupy

Maybe you should add a warning that the YouTube video may not be ‘work safe’.

  • Cahal

Can’t he be traced and prosecuted?

  • And what are the police doing to lift them? Then again, I suppose it’s hardly worth their while chasing these idiots when the British Government is similtaneously funding them.

  • Cahal

Why is there no ‘flag as innapropriate’ link below this video. Youtube need to sort this out.

  • GavBelfast

When people have been brought up to hate and were brought onto the streets, often in prams and buggies, and as fodder to brick the security forces, etc, over the years, is it really any surprise that a section then goes on to utilise modern communication methods like this to show and flaunt their simultaneously pathetic and disgusting hate and prejudices?

  • get over it

I thought the tune was catchy and the lyrics weren’t that bad.

does anyone know where you can buy the CD

  • TAFKABO

Traced and prosecuted for what exactly?

Being stupid and ignorant isn’t a crime, presumably because the jails are full enough as it is.

  • Doctor Who

Great to see the anti censorship lobby of SuperSoupy and Chris D. wanting to ban something that they find offensive.

Of course the reason Chris posted this 8 month old video was to get to a “whataboutery” debate. Everybody knows that youtube is littered with the most disgusting propaganda, including laments to IRA murdering barbarians.

If we are going to start trading youtube sectarian links, this thread will run for quite a while.

Say no to the Sinn Fein censors.

  • Northsider

Ten years or less perhaps, when things have settled down here, and this kid’s nothing life starts to unpack itself, he will look back at this and how he felt and what he said and probably need counselling for the disgust and shame that will begin to torment him.

  • Cahal it is flagged, but you don’t see the warning because you’re on this kid’s “channel”. If you click the “comments” link you get the “May contain inappropriate material” warning before you get taken to the video’s main page.

  • SuperSoupy

    Dr Who,

wtf are you on about, my only comment was people should be aware it may not be a good idea to click the video link at work.

  • Cahal

    Beano, thanks for the info.

    TAFKABO,

“Being stupid and ignorant isn’t a crime”

No, but isn’t the glorifcation of terrorism a crime according to our overlords in London.

  • Cahal

You know what, all I have is pity for him. He’s not a criminal at all, just a perfect example of how f’d up the north is.

A moderator should take down No feck you’s post.

  • joeCanuck

    C’mon Supersoupy. You know he’s a troll.

  • roger

The kids site is even more depressing than the video.

flute bands, sectarianism and the usual football teams.

I don’y know whether to just feel sad for the kid.

  • Rory

The tune was catchy, if less than original, but that’s forgiveable. The lyrics and sentiments fell somewhat short of charming but, insofar as the song expressed what might well be popular sentiment among a section of youth, however much we might deplore or pooh-pooh or harumph, harumph it, I beleive it would be even more deplorable to seek prosecution for singing the song. Such censorship is always counterproductive and only reinforces the attitudes being combatted. We still have a long way to go with our work on attitudes and the legacy of our history and I trust we have at least learned enough to know that repression is not the way forward.

When asked to refer to some great piece of pholsosophy that might shed a light on how to proceed in weighty matters such as this I am often tempted to quote a line from that wonderful inspiring masterpiece of English philosophy, Little Bo Peep:

Leave them alone and they’ll come home
    Wagging their tails behind them.

For now, leave them alone, let them develop at their own pace and let the better, more tolerant society we build be the force for good that alters their mindset.

  • The Dubliner

Unfortunately, the extremists in PSF and the DUP spent their careers intensifying the sectarianism that led to the murder of Ballymena Catholic teenager, Michael McIlveen, and the celebration of his murder by his peers from the other tribe. Both of those extremist factions have been rewarded by the electorate for their respective ignoble contributions to the north’s polarised society, so the ambiguous message is that the bigot’s are endorsed by society and their bigotry duplicitously legitimised. A local DUP politician, Roy Gillespie, said of Michael McIlveen: “As a Catholic, he won’t get into heaven unless he has been saved. If he did not repent before he died and asked the Lord into his heart, he will not get into heaven. Catholics are not accepted into heaven.” Ian Paisley, another anti-Catholic bigot, is the local MP. Teenagers don’t pay any attention to adults who condemn sectarian violence and then proceed to elect those who are most responsible for it. Likewise, the sectarian murder campaign of PSF is noted in the teenager’s Youtube video when he mentions Martin McGuinness (who continues to glorify PSF/PIRA’s sectarian murder campaign). With those two extremists as FM and DFM respectively, you can forget about preaching the evils of sectarianism to kids in a society that elects sectarian extremists – kids can sniff a hypocritical fraud at 100 yards.

  • normski

Dubliner, speaking of hypocritical fraud, has anyone found Bertie’s cash-packed suitcase yet?

Youse elect plenty of crap politicians yourselves……

  • Mustapha Mond

What a disgusting little toe rag.

“Roy Gillespie, said of Michael McIlveen: “As a Catholic, he won’t get into heaven unless he has been saved. If he did not repent before he died and asked the Lord into his heart, he will not get into heaven. Catholics are not accepted into heaven.”

According to dead jew worshipping Messr Gillespie, I aint going to heaven/paradise/disney land either… am I bothered? dat would be a no.

  • BP1078

    Chris,
How did you hear of this (4 month old) video and why did you decide to give this one in particular publicity, by bringing it to a wider audience?
Are you not doing the moron producer a big favour?

I can’t imagine he’ll be too bothered about all the criticism we’ve given him on here, he’ll more than likely be getting off on the fact that he’s riled up an untold number of “fenians” with your little advertisement.

Unless we decide we want the same kind of control there is over the internet in China, Egypt and Saudi Arabia, then we’re always going to see similar racist/sectarian/general bigotted shite that will offend someone, somewhere (usually at least two comments a day on Slugger fall into that category with me personally).

By all means press your “flag as inappropriate” or “this offends” button, but they’ll probably be another piece of similar crap along soon, best tactic is probbaly to ignore and deny the losers involved the oxygen of publicity they deserve.

  • BP1078

    Last sentence above:
“deny the losers involved the oxygen of publicity they desire” not “deserve”

  • Comrade Stalin

That whole bebo site is screwed. Not only this idiot’s broken view of life, but those who queued up to abuse him as a “hun c**t”. On the brighter side, I wonder what he thought when he saw that press conference between Ian Paisley and Gerry Adams.

    Rory,

For now, leave them alone, let them develop at their own pace and let the better, more tolerant society we build be the force for good that alters their mindset.

Very true. Applying that attitude across the board is what we need to do to fix our problems here. However whenever I say that on Slugger I get accused of living in a utopian dreamworld, and refusing to accept the reality on the ground.

    Dubliner:

“As a Catholic, he won’t get into heaven unless he has been saved. If he did not repent before he died and asked the Lord into his heart, he will not get into heaven. Catholics are not accepted into heaven.”

Dubliner, in cases like that I remind myself that if heaven does exist and wankers like the person who said this get into it, then I definitely don’t want to be there. Let them repeat their bile. At least they alert us to the fact that they’re morons ahead of time.

  • The Lord is my sheperd

To dwell in the arms of the Lord
    ‘ye must be born again’

if you deny the lord then the kingdom of heaven shall not shelter you and eternal damnation awaits

  • Comrade Stalin

if you deny the lord then the kingdom of heaven shall not shelter you and eternal damnation awaits

What does the Lord think of people who can’t spell “Shepherd” ?

  • I wonder…

    “Ian Paisley, another anti-Catholic bigot”
    The Dubliner

Yeah, its easier to have the most simplistic view possible – 150 miles south of Ballymena.

The only difference between the views on Youtube and yours is ability to use the English language and find Slugger.

  • I wonder…

    and its “shepherd”, sheperd 😉

  • Comrade Stalin

    “I Wonder” :

I know the viewpoint of the commentator. I was tying t’create self-awareness. Its a byproduct o logging on to this site 😉 I look forward to seein a *DUBLIN* (northside?:) expression here.

Just watching that video destroys brain cells.

  • Dr Strangelove

At least this young lad knows there will be a job at Wright’s for him when he leaves school.

  • nmc

Off topic, but the darker side of the web? Gotta be the lowest of the low, the piece of excrement who keeps posting ads for viagra and casinos on threads here…

I reckon this could be a dvd cv to impress Wrights. Methinks he will have to do better than this to secure employment there!

The internet is just a new tool.

There was some trouble at that interface nearly every Easter & Summer when the kids were off school for decades.

I know, I used to make the short journey about a mile or so up the road to stand around and look hard when I was a kid at the very same interface.

  • Yokel

    Frank

You mean the adventures of Marcus Aurelius or whatever and his family?

Oh god, its comeing to me like Vietnam vet flashback………

  • mickhall

Now the shinners are in bed with the big b i g o t, they can no long attack him and his underlines, so hey they think, why not attack some some working class kid who they are absolutely certain will not come back too haunt them and bring down their mockney administration around their ears..

What a man Donnelly is, when he is not tweaking Mr Fealty’s tail with reminders of whose in government these days, he comes up with the earth shattering information that the north has its fair share of bitter, sectarian and angry youngsters who know how to use the WWW. Far from wanting to highlight this fact so that the problem can be dealt with in a civilized manner, he and his pals here want to censor it. If it is not in the media it does not exist.

[Better these kids pose on the internet than be enticed to pull on a balaclava and sneak about at night ?]

Donnelly’s Party signs up for a sectarian stitch up of a government and then they cry crocodile tears when people behave in a sectarian manner.

    Give the man a coconut!

The internet is just a new tool.

Couldn’t agree more. Essentially, what certain sites (that seem to be getting a bad rep) provide, is a means of communication.

Most people I think would agree that the good outwieghs the bad in this. The web allows all manner of info to be passed around, mostly used for legitimate research and communication (excluding pornography).

It is interesting what the kids decide to do with this new form of communication. A door has been opened in that these kids can communicate with their “enemies” in a way which the couldn’t have done using a mobile phone for example.

I would imagine that while some kids are out there spilling hatred into their Bebo page, there are numerous others who have pages on the same site that are covered in hippy love and peace symbols. Obviously that is not newsworthy.

In summary I believe that these web sites that allow people to place a personalised page/bio on the web, only allow us to see the problems that already exist in the mindsets of some young people. These sites do not create the problem, they highlight it.

It is fascinating to see though, what young people do now, when faced with a blank canvas for their own expression.
