Palestinians offer to release of Israeli soldier…

Given the discussion here and here (check out the new, slow discussions at the Guardian), Conal Urquhart reports for the Guardian that Palestinians elements have offered to release the Israeli soldier kidnapped almost a month ago. However, the terms being offered have neither signed off by the Hamas secretariat in Damacus or Israel.

  • Moral of the story; Terrorists understand war:war, not jaw:jaw.

Put yourself in Israeli shoes and what would you do ?

Put yourself in Hezbollah shoes and would you do any different?

  • Brian Boru

Israel stop being so bloody intransigent the world is against your imperialist Zionazism.

    David Vance,

The trouble with this war, war, (as with any) is that the vast majority if the dead and wounded are not terrorists or indeed combatants. They’re just ordinary folk, babies included. Do you excuse their murders?

But let’s not let that get in the way of the right-wing asserting it vicious and utterly failed dictum of might is right.

  • Delta,

    1. None of the Israeli combatants are terrorists.
    2. If Hezbollah, like Hamas, use innocents are human shields, whose fault is that?

But don’t let this get in the way of a liberal waffling sub-Lennonesque platitudes.

  • Dualta

    David,

I never said that any of the Israeli combatants are terrorists. What’s your point?

Secondly, are you seriously suggesting that all of the dead on both sides are being used as human shields by Hezbollah and Hamas?

If you read my post more closely this time you will notice that I didn’t limit my comments to those being murdered by the Israelis, but to all those civilians being murdered, either by the Israelis or by the rockets of Hezbollah.

But don’t let that get in the way of a mindless rant.

  • Slartibuckfast

I hope they get a promise of a good couple of thousand Palestinians to be released if they let that little Nazi go. But can you trust Nazis?

Hizbollah is part of the Lebanese government, Dualta. They decided that that should not prevent them attacking Israel. Once you are part of the government, what you do is no longer freelance violence, it’s casus belli. Hizbollah dragged Lebanon into this conflict, not Israel.

  • Slartibuckfast

So I take you’d say it was alright for say Iraqis to come over to America and blow up ambulances and primary schools then?

  • Dread Cthulhu

Dualta: “… are you seriously suggesting that all of the dead on both sides are being used as human shields by Hezbollah and Hamas? ”

Not to speak for DV, no, they are not.

However, Hizbollah and Hamas *are* building their “military” infrastructure in the middle of civilian population centers and using residential areas to launch their rockets. As such, they are “volunteering” their own civilian populations as human shields while deliberately targetting Israeli civilians.

Dread: “Hizbollah is part of the Lebanese government, Dualta. They decided that that should not prevent them attacking Israel. Once you are part of the government, what you do is no longer freelance violence, it’s casus belli. Hizbollah dragged Lebanon into this conflict, not Israel.

That’s completely missing the point of what I said Dread. If Israel want to go after their kidnapped soldiers then who could blame them? If they want to take on the Hizbollah, then they’ve got as good an excuse as any.

But I never mentioned anything about that. My point was straight forward and clear. The result of the escalation of this conflict has been that hundreds of people have been killed and the vast majority of them have been innocent civilians of all ages and that, for me, makes this war disgusting and immoral.

By the way, Israel and Hezbollah are responsible for their own actions which result in the deaths of civilians, no-one else. It’s like the IRA blaming the Brits for Bloody Friday or the Brits blaming the IRA for Bloody Sunday.

  • It’s like the IRA blaming the Brits for Bloody Friday or the Brits blaming the IRA for Bloody Sunday.

    Isn’t that exactly what happened?

“It’s all their fault, I tell you!”
