Farewell PDN…

Newton Emerson with his farewell to the Internet, or at least the Portadown focused part of it. Love it or hate it, the PDN resides on the blogroll of many bloggers far and wide. Portadown’s loss will be our future gain, as he seeks to push his energies into a deeper journalistic furrow. Go Newt! Let us have your memories of NI’s No 1 Satirical site. Thanks to Alan for the heads up!

This is the point in the concert when the band has said goodby and left the stage, but the audience is on its feet chanting “We want More!”

Let’s deluge Newt with “Don’t Go” emails to portadownnews@hotmail.com

  • Alan

Ever onward! All the best Newty.

As John Mayall (may peace not be upon him) said in concert when the crowd were calling for his old songs – “What did you come here for – to hear an old record or something?”

I’m sure it can only get better.

  • BookSalesMustHave BeenPoor

“I’d rather eat my own turds” Ian Paisley

“I thought I had that shit shot” Gerry Adams

“Newton what? From where?” The BBC

“Thank fcuk for that” Paul Berry

  • Fanny

Dunno about that – I didn’t get my copy of the Portadown News for Christmas because it had “sold out”. Unless the meant the other kind of “sold out”, of course…

  • aquifer

I guess we all have to be ‘people of the book’ now

  • Fishfiss

Good riddance to PDN, it was shite.

  • Fanny

I must admit I’m really going to miss it.

  • The UDA

At last. Next the Sunday World.

  • United Irelander

Shame to see it go. It was very good in my opinion.

  • S*uinter

Furious furore™ over fortuitous freelancer’s finale!!

It was a blast, well done Newt & all the best with the new column.

  • maca

Sad news i reckon, I always enjoy my visits to PDN.

Newton, I hope you at least keep the archives online…

  • Henry94

That’s a shame. I enjoyed it. Good luck to Newton Emerson with the new job.

  • DCB

It was great. Still all comedy has a shelf life, best to knock it out when it’s still going strong. It must have taken a lot of effort to keep it going, especially doing it once a week, and it managed to be consistently good. Will miss it.

I’m sure he can get another anthology punted out of it.

  • Jo

Quit while you’re ahead – is he deliberately mimicing Ricky Gervais? Wishful aspirational thinking…

  • comedy gold

Good luck Newton and damn the begrudgers who are only sickened by your success. I worked in Easons and can tell you for a fact that the book was one of our fastest selling over Christmas and there were a lot of disapointed punters who couldnt get it when it sold out. Good to see he’s extending his reach yet further – Irish News, Irish Times, BBC 5 Live, News 24 and BBC3 the other night! – now the Mirror, nice one.
I followed the PDN from when he was just an anonymous hack and wanted to stay that way until someone maliciously got him sacked from some shit IT job out of sectarian spite. He must be sick as a parrot!
Just like Fawlty Towers and unlike the Onion, he got out when the going was good without shitting in the nest. Feckin’ great! 🙂

First Charlie Brooker stopped “TV Go Home”, now the PDN bows out…a sad day!

  • Dr. Ian

    New website – http://www.provowatch.blogspot.com

    Check it out

  • Fanny

If that cr*p is someone’s idea of the Portadown News replacement then this country is in more trouble than I thought.

  • nmc

    I concurr Fanny. Pure Sh!te.

  • Jo

Ah well, one door closes…and another one opens:

I didn’t always agree with Newts points of view but he had a decent hit/miss ratio with PDN.
Occasionaly he lost the plot and went after targets that were a bit too easy (poor people with weight problems, single mums, Paul Berry), but overall he was spot on and slung the shit where it needed to be slung.
Bigotry and intolerance are by nature, humourless, therefore it’s no surprise to find that certain people never got the joke.
I guess the best compliment I could pay him is to say that I find it incredible that he could have done the whole thing himself.
A place like Northern Ireland cries out for decent satire, and it pains me to think that we might be left with “Give My head Peace” or “the folks on the Hill” as a substitute for the PDN.
People can slag off Newt all they want, but he has managed to make a career out of his website, and that’s something millions of others can only dream off.
To his credit, he was willing to come here and defend his opinions when other preferred to issue threats of legal action.

So, thank’s for the (free) laughs Newt, good luck for the future.

  • carlosblancos

Very down the dumps that PDN is going, altho in truth its glory days were behind it. N Emerson remains one of Ireland’s best writers.

  • barnshee

A sad day —best of luck for the successful future ahead

  • Nicholas

Sorry to see this, but not surprised.

I thought that while last week’s wasn’t fantastic, the two previous weeks were real classics, and said so only yesterday on my livejournal here. A few months ago I reviewed some of his best hits here. Ah well, there it goes; good luck to Newton in his future work, which I will follow as best I can from over here in Belgium.

  • levee

Awwww! I loved the Portadown News! I used to laugh so hard at that strip, I’d be out of breath and have tears streaming down my cheeks!

Best of luck to yer man. Must check out some of the alternatives.

  • Piggy Ring

I was barred from the Portadown News guestbook several years ago for quite wilful assholery. I have few regrets and felt that the discussion aspect of the site suffered in latter times from a lack of assholery but became like a crass argument in the back bar of Laverys. Mundane, juvenile and predictable. None of this was Newton’s fault since the PDN itself was always truly fantastic and I would still shake his hand should I ever meet him…the geeky twat.

  • slug

I think Emerson is a good writer and has been good critic of many aspects of unionist politics, which is something that unionism needs. I never read the Mirror but hope that his work will be found on Newshound.

  • crat

Who is Newt’s boss at the Mirror? Did they appoint someone after Harkin left for a 3 week new job before redundancy? What is Greg at now btw?

  • Gonzo

    Well. There’s a good question.

  • Gonzo

Oh, by the way Newt, if you ever read this – nice one. You can be a bollocks, but you’re a talented bollocks.

    As me Ma said.

  • Sadie Hastings-Farquar

Big ups to Mr emerson for many years of calling those who needed to be called names names.

He give us at randomshite a shout out from early on, but we will say nothing of the night of passion he had with Mavis Davis which led to it.

Anyway, as he has in a way passed the baton onto us and Purederry, we think he is due a big old round of applause as we add him to our deathlist. His page will be sorely missed and often cheered us up after a night on the sherry. But i am not spending any money on The Mirror, I don’t care how funny he is.

(When will they be filming the Behind the Laughter show about him?)

    Sadie Hastings-Farquar

  • The Watchman

Let me stike a note of discord and say that I frequently found the PDN to be filthy and misogynistic. Anyone can get a laugh from profanity and Mr Emerson employed a lot of it.

  • DCB

Your not still bitter over Paul “I hope your a prod” Berry

  • Cllr Marvin Currie

    I agree with Watchman.
Mr Emerson frequently used unneccessary bad language and offensive profanity.

    …the cheeky c**t
