Slugger goes live…

IF anyone from Northern Ireland is affected by events in London or has up-to-date information that we’re not getting through the media, Slugger will obviously be happy to carry your comments below. However, some in the mainstream media would be interested in speaking to locals in London, and as a bit of an experiment, I’m trying to get in contact with users like Lafcadio, who seem to be at the heart of things in Canary Wharf. You can reach me through the email – reclaim98@hotmail.com – and I can pass your phone details on to a journalist (or you can call my newsdesk). No wasters please. No profits either way. Let’s see how this goes…

  • Lafcadio

Hi Gonzo, I’m (thankfully) a bit out of the action in Canary Wharf, which is a couple of miles east of the City, so can’t imagine I’ll have much of interest to pass on (touch wood..)

I’ll struggle to get in touch by email too, because thanks to the glacial pace of bureaucracy here, I still haven’t been set up on our systems despite starting new job almost two weeks ago!

    And my phones aren’t working!!

But I’ll be in touch if anything of interest happens out here..

I work in the East End not far from Canary Wharf. I had no problems getting to work this morning coming throught the Blackwall Tunnel.

have well placed media sources here in London pass on the latest facts:

    7 July 2005

Latest information confirms that there were four incidents on London’s transport network this morning, three on London Underground and one on London Buses.

At 09:46, the London Underground was suspended and all stations commenced evacuation following incidents at: Aldgate station heading towards Liverpool Street station on the Hammersmith & City line; Russell Square station
heading towards Kings Cross station on the Piccadilly line; and Edgware Road station heading towards Paddington station on the Hammersmith & City line.

Zone 1 bus services were temporarily suspended this morning following an incident on a Route 30 bus at Woburn Place and extra security checks were undertaken on buses remaining in operation and at all garages.

Emergency services responded immediately to all incidents and are dealing with a number of casualties who have been taken to hospitals across London.
Unfortunately, whilst we can confirm that there have been fatalities no confirmed figures are currently available.

Additional temporary service suspensions and public information

The Docklands Light Railway has been suspended as a precaution – there have been no incidents on the DLR network.

It would still be great to hear from people. Had one call already.

    Anyone got any mobile photos?

No, but I have a mobile vid clip of our chief exec’s statement via PA, cumlinating in him inexplicably being cut off mid-sentence, while advising us not to leave the building – we all laughed nervously..

He came on a couple of hours later to assure us he hadn’t been cut off so that he could escape from the roof by exec helicopter, but that the system cuts out after a certain amount of time..

Emmett – I think that your report may be too conservative, even BBC News are reporting more explosions than that, and the last I heard 45 deaths.. I’d love to be wrong, but..

For info: tube completely closed; bus in Z1 at least closed; our bank guys reckon that mainline stations will be open by this evening for OUT-bound trains (not sure about inbound); my uncle’s in Luton Airport at the minute and says that it’s chaos because nobody can get into London..

  • midonogh

    Interesting
Guy beside me is talking to his brother in Australia and comparing the tickers on Sky News as broadcast in Australia and in London. The information and broadcast is identical other than that Sky News UK is not listing the 45 dead number and Australia is.

  • DCB

We got told not to leave buildings, but nobody stoped us. Heard that there has been some action in CW with a suicide bomber shot, don’t know if that’s bollox but it’s been said by a lot of people. There are snippers on top of the LSE.

Apparently a limited overland train service is running. We have hotel rooms booked and a lot of staff are going to stay there.

I am going to go home in an hour or so on my newly bought bike. The shop I got it from was nearly sold out.

All the way to Muswelll Hill – at least the weathers looking better

  • DCB

the big bus bomb was allegedly a suicide attack – seems like all the other were planted

  • midonogh

We have just been advised in work (Canary Wharf)that Riverboats will not carry anyone with a bag including womens handbags. Probably a good idea to leave the bags behind no matter what way you are going home.

  • Lafcadio

Our chief exec is on PA at the minute; so this is up-to-date info from security sources on transport links – tube will be closed all day; expect DLR to run again this evening; mainline stations expected to be open for outbound; and apparently we have waterbuses lined up to take us back to sites along the river..

Security services have confirmed to the bank that it’s now safe to walk and cycle home from the Wharf..

    And we have tomorrow off..

  • midonogh

I have heard the CW suicide bomber story a few times but have seen no police activity out here. Police presence is actually very light

  • Emmett

Apologies for my post appearing three times.

This was a statement of facts to media from Met police.

Note there was no incident at Canary Wharf.

  • Emmett

    …and here is the timtable:

First bomb on tube at 8.49.
    Then 2nd tube bomb 9.33
    Third tube bomb at 9.40.
    Bus bomb, Woburn Place, 9.50

  • SeamusG

Will be at work tonight (Press Association) and I will post as much up-to-date stuff as I can get away with. I’ll be talking to all the other guys from the nationals so should be able to get a good idea of what is actually going on.

  • DCB

midonogh – I think it’s rubbish – it’s hard to know – been hearing stuff on email all morning before it’s been reported.

It was like this on 911 – there was rumours of a plane going missing flying from Amsterdam and headed for CW

Good to see the ftse bounce back a bit. We need to ignore the attacks as much as possible and go about live as per normal – though I admit that I don’t fancy getting on the tube

I was out last night, worse for wear this morning. I very nearly slept in knowing that I didn’t really need to be in this morning, would have been going throuh R Sq at close to 9ish if I had.

  • Lafcadio

I haven’t seen a single copper today in the Wharf, although admittedly I’ve only been outside once – and the shopping centre at the station was absolutely deserted!

I’m going to go up to 27th floor soon for a look out to see if I can see any snipers..

  • TAFKABO

I can imagine that the Brit based news agencies are being very cautious about reporting casualty figures, for fear of being accused of scaremongering, or causing uneccessary panic if the figures turn out to be wrong.

  • DCB

Lafcadio – the suicide story is rubbish – but it’s done the rounds.

There’s armed police all over the city – not seen the army yet despite rumours that there about

really scary thing is that there not sure what line one of the bombs went off on. I think we don’t have a clue how many have been killed and if there are people traped down there.

  • DCB

The BBC has been very conservative and slow to report, sky was much better.

BBC were still cliaming it was a power surge at near 10 am – IIRC.

  • Young Fogey

All the way to Muswelll Hill – at least the weathers looking better

Young folk these days! When ah were a lad we had to cycle from Muswell Hill to Croydon tiwce a day for school and if we didn’t our Dad would beat us with barbed wire!

Seriously, that’s not too far you lazy puff, but take a hint and take a detour to avoid Archway – that hill is a killer.

Looking like a nice evening for a walk through the park, will have a look at the Edgware Road on the way home within the limits of taste and decency.

  • DCB

    YF

It shouldn’t be too bad – hills are hard to avoid but reckon I’ll approach from Finsbury park and go through Crouch End.

Will cycle in tomorrow – think there will be some tubes running but it won’t be pleasent.

  • midonogh

Nice 10mile walk to Tooting Bec. At least the evening is looking fine. SAfe home everyone

  • Young Fogey

They’re going to try and get the buses back from 4 – i.e. from now.

  • The Dog

I got a rumour from a friend in LIverpool that her boyfriend in London had been ordered to stay in the building – at canary wharf – with the rumour that a suicide bomber had been shot by the police. Might this tie with some of the earlier posting.

It is also clear – and probably the best thing – to minimise local reporting on numbers etc.. for molral and to avoid panic.

Red Ken you are a hero – london is a propere diverse city – say it – be proud – nothing will divide us no matter where we come from.

To all the nut nuts if you think that a security solution will work you obviously live in a small bubble – racism is not the way – if we become xenophobes then they have one.

But on the other hand let’s get real there are those with politics that can be engaged with and there are those with none who can’t – the only way to achieve stability to to work with those who have the politics

  • Young Fogey

    From Transport for London:

    16:11 Latest service information

Docklands Light Railway has resumed but will not be stopping at Bank, Stratford and Canning Town.
National Rail has resumed service but there is continued disruption.
Bus services in Zone 1 are returning to service.
London Underground will be closed for the rest of the day and will resume service tomorrow morning.

    Good luck!`

  • La Dolorosa

Dog – just to say that I agree with you 100% re your analysis re raccism/xenophobia as possible outcomes frpm OTT /kneejerk security measures

  • Young Fogey

I got a rumour from a friend in LIverpool that her boyfriend in London had been ordered to stay in the building – at canary wharf – with the rumour that a suicide bomber had been shot by the police. Might this tie with some of the earlier posting.

    It’s an unsubstantiated rumour.

  • Lafcadio

We’ve just been told to leave the building basically, the bank having lined up water buses / coaches.

Latest transport: DLR is running again; police expect some tube stations to be running again tonight, although won’t say which; the water buses earmarked for our bank have been commandeered by the police

Also for anyone hoping to catch a water taxi – the police are not allowing anyone on with bags, laptops, coats (!! thats what we’ve just been advised!) or mobile phones (!!)

I’m hoping for a coach that’s passing waterloo I hope to get home to c’ham junction before nightfall..

    Safe journey all!!

  • La Dolorosa

Just taken the tune to work from Seven Sisters to Chalk Farm via Kings CRoss & Euston which were closed. There were quite a few people on the train – not as busy as normal.

I suppose initially it seems a bit offputting to get back on to the tube the day after such an attack but when you think about it rationally it’s probably the safest time and you will be able to get a seat (and that’s not meant to be a flippant comment just the from truth).

  • la dolorosa

last line – meant to read ‘grim truth’

  • joe

there was suicide bomber at canary wharf.
I know this becuase an officer from cid has told his wife (who told me) he then confirmed this to me (obviously pissed with his wife) He said that the news will have to come out soon as it’s the talk of the office.
