Low key campaign, low turn out

Mark Durkan says that the DUP and Sinn Fein have deliberately run low key campaigns to try and keep turn out low. That’s probably true. Indeed, the lack of urgency in some of the UUP’s liberal heartland is staggering at times. One Holywood resident told Slugger that although he’d been an Alliance voter for over twenty years, he thought that this time he should vote Sylvia Hermon “to keep the DUP out The trouble is, can I be even bothered to go out and vote?” When I told another elderly and diligent voter about John Coulter’s wipeout scenario from yesterday, the answer “Shit! Well, I’m going to vote in this one, but if all we are left with is a choice between Sinn Fein and the DUP, I won’t be voting again”.

For over 20 years, Slugger has been an independent place for debate and new ideas. We have published over 40,000 posts and over one and a half million comments on the site. Each month we have over 70,000 readers. All this we have accomplished with only volunteers we have never had any paid staff.

Slugger does not receive any funding, and we respect our readers, so we will never run intrusive ads or sponsored posts. Instead, we are reader-supported. Help us keep Slugger independent by becoming a friend of Slugger. While we run a tight ship and no one gets paid to write, we need money to help us cover our costs.
