    I think that’s a little unfair, Davros.

    Reading Heaney’s prose I’m always struck by the deliberateness in his choice of words – there’s a measured precision in which he seeks to convey an exact meaning, reminiscent of, and perhaps in contrast to, the “insuffiency of lyric”.

    That quote from Donald Davie should read “insufficiency of lyric”.

    Pete, I find it difficult reading – puzzles me how someone who can write such delights as “an open letter” can be such heavy going in prose.
