Liam Clarke in the Sunday Times announces that the IRA will stop all paramilitary actions as laid down in the three documents to be released by Friday. But according to Henry McDonald and Nicola Byrne they have no intention of disarming.
Or at least not just yet. When it does happen it’s one, likely to be of the IRA’s choosing and two, it is also likely to be definative.
Considering this story has been prompting heavy speculation since the end of November, the whole affair is becoming fairly dull. Which is perhaps the point. Fionnuala O’Connor may have summed it all up with a single remark on this week’s Hearts and Minds programme.
It used to be said that politics in NI was a high wire act. Well now the high wire is about 3 feet off the ground.
