Tony Benn: Will and Testament – a reflective politician not afraid to say he made mistakes

What kind of politicians do we want? Those who can admit mistakes? Or those who believe to the end that their actions were justified and appropriate? What was missing in Ian Paisley’s interviews with Eamonn Mallie screened on BBC One NI earlier this year was any kind of self-reflection, any kind of realisation that he’d made mistakes and that Northern Ireland would have been better-served by different decisions and actions. I’ve made a million mistakes in my life – I’m …

Belfast Film Festival – Lebanon, Syria, Iran, Albania, Maze/Long Kesh and Belfast

The annual Belfast Film Festival starts tonight and runs for 10 days showing 121 films. I’ve blogged elsewhere about some of the festival highlights. There’s certainly plenty of local and international films to challenge, entertain or even offend. I thought I’d bring some of the international/conflict/political films to the attention of Slugger readers. Sunday 30 March at 21:00 – Noirland – Dublin Road Moviehouse – Northern Ireland’s first crime anthology from writer/director Philip Henry. Three stories following one man who …

“This gang thought they could exploit rules for genuine British filmmakers and thieve from the public purse for their own gain”

When the BBC report notes that the actress/producer sentenced to 5 years 5 months, reduced to 4 years 8 months, for her part in a £2.8million VAT and film tax credits scam, was “from London”, what they mean is that she was from Newry, with an address in London – as UTV correctly reported.  [I blame the PA copy – Ed]  Perhaps… What neither mentioned, but both the Irish Times and the Irish News do report today, is that the actress involved, Aoife …

Donald Trump movie and the ill-defined concept of the ‘public interest’…

If you have watched You’ve Been Trumped yet, you should. There are many strong points to this documentary on not just how Donald Trump threw his weight around with local residents whose homes bordered his development in Aberdeenshire. But of most interest to me is the degree to which the Scottish media and Scottish civil society meekly abandoned any public interest duty and at the very least acquiesced in the rich American’s appalling treatment of his ‘neighbours’. One of the …

Rochdale Pioneers: “Those who said no to us, can’t have their way forever…”

Just had a heads up that the film about Rochdale Pioneers is showing in the Strand Picture House in Belfast [handy for DUP and UUP headquarters – Ed] tonight… Aye, it were grim up north (of England)… It’s worth mentioning that next week’s #DigitalLunch lunch features Tony Hawks’ Moldovan Movie which you can stream and donate to… Mick FealtyMick is founding editor of Slugger. He has written papers on the impacts of the Internet on politics and the wider media …

Prometheus Unbound…

A geeky Christmas gift via the Guardian’s film blog.  The official trailer for Prometheus – “the long-awaited return to the Alien universe (and indeed science fiction) of one Ridley Scott.”  It’s due to be released in June 2012.  Can’t.  Wait.  *hugs self* Pete Baker

Elizabeth Taylor 1932-2011

Screen icon Elizabeth Taylor has died in Los Angeles at the age of 79.  The BBC obituary focuses on her very public private life.  But as an antidote to that, the Guardian’s film blog has a great collection of clips from her movie career.  From which I’ve picked out a clip from one of her best performances, alongside Richard Burton in Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? A Very British Coup

Having pulled together the video round of the Politics Quiz for Haiti back in October, I’m now going through a backlog of DVDs with a political theme. A Very British Coup tells the story of Harry Perkins, a steel worker from Sheffield turned politician is elected as prime minister of a left-wing Labour government. Though the book behind the screenplay was written by Chris Mullins in 1981, it is a peep into a parallel universe to see what might have …

A film……..600+ photos

The 15second film festival asked me and fellow artist KVLR to make a film. It’s comprised of 600+ individual photographs stitched together in final cut pro. KVLR, aside from doing the painting, also did the music. I think we may well do another one. If you go to any of the films being shown at the QFT as part of the Festival at Queens you will be able to see it, along with a few others, on the big screen. …

Making Political Films About the North: Then and Now

Here’s something with a bit of politics for the film buffs reading Slugger. As part of Belfast Film Festival and in conjunction with Index on Censorship there’s a free session on Thursday 29th at 2pm in the QFT looking at Making Political Films About the North: Then and Now. The troubles in the North of Ireland have long been the subject of film-makers. This film-making landscape has changed over the years, as has the political landscape. Self Censorship and direct …
