Eames Bradley report launched to protest

There will be plenty of time to pick over the detail of the Eames Bradley report. At its launch, however, there was little sign of any reconciliation with the meeting being disrupted by protestors. The one thing that seems to unite almost everyone is the unacceptability of the £12,000 which makes one wonder why two supposedly sensible, empathetic men in charge of the commission allowed this to happen: naivety or an attempt to deflect attention away from other parts of …

Update. “ We are fast approaching decision time on what we do about the past and how much we are prepared to pay for not moving beyond it.” Gregory Campbell MP (more below the fold) Are costs to be cut in the running of public inquiries and other bodies responsible of unearthing the dark events of the Troubles? The Common’s Northern Ireland Select Committee clearly think they should be, according to a report now being unveiled in Belfast and available …

THE Sinn Fein ard fheis is under way, and you can keep up to date with the latest news here at the party’s snazzy event website. You can read the list of motions here, and I’ve blogged a few thoughts on them below the fold. The Bearded One’s speech can be viewed here live tomorrow (Saturday March 1st) from 5-6pm. After meeting with Lord Stevens in London recently the Eames/Bradley group were in Armagh today, along with former Finnish president and arms inspector Martti Ahtisaari and former Drumcree mediator Brian Currin, to meet with the PSNI’s Historical Enquiries Team and, according to the BBC report, they’ll be meeting with the Human Rights Commission soon [that might be an interesting encounter – Ed]. No word on meetings with others yet.. but since they’ll be seeking views on dealing with the past …

“There is no worth in a half-truth process”

I had mentioned the absence of confirmation from the Secretary of State for Wales, etc, on the ‘dealing with the legacy’ review.. and now “an informed source” has told Brian Rowan, in the Belfast Telegraph, that we’ll hear something in the next fortnight. In the meantime that same informed source says that two members of the “study group” will be Lord Eames and Denis Bradley. Now, I don’t want to prejudge what is supposed to be an 18 month review.. …
